Amidst the wreckage, Albert’s 15-year-old guitar prodigy son Max (Harry Holden White) is left without a home. Bob refuses to take custody due to reasons related to his wife that often seemed illogical. Consequently, Max is placed under state care. Yet before he could be moved to a foster home, Max flees.

Moving forward a few years, we find Max (now portrayed by Zachary Gordon) thriving as a gifted guitarist in a renowned rock band. Additionally, he’s been tirelessly working to secure his father’s release from prison. Unfortunately, each parole hearing has ended unfavorably, mainly due to the emotional testimonies of John’s distraught daughter, Alaina (played exceptionally by Lindsey Dresbach), and a questionable detective named Dan Clancy (Michael Madsen). The reasons behind Clancy’s underhanded actions remain unclear throughout.

After receiving the devastating diagnosis of terminal brain cancer, a new sense of urgency arises for Albert. With limited time left, Max yearns for his father to be granted ‘compassionate release’ instead of spending his final days in prison. However, securing such a release won’t be straightforward and could involve reaching out to the uncle he still holds responsible for not providing a home. Additionally, it might necessitate persuading Alaina to exercise leniency and refrain from testifying against Albert.

The story unfolds smoothly, as Weisman skillfully untangles and reweaves the various plotlines that form his narrative. Simultaneously, the acting remains authentic and deeply embedded within the raw and layered backdrop of Los Angeles. Cinematographer Tim Banks captures the city in a way that breathes life into the characters and their predicaments.

In the narrative, not all loose ends are neatly tied up, leaving us puzzled at times. However, Terre Weisman skillfully crafts a tale that resonates deeply with human emotions from start to finish. The movie tackles heavy topics and complex themes, but ultimately it’s the characters who steal the show, developing and growing amidst the tension that connects them.
