At the 18th yearly event honoring Women in Film, they commemorated the successes of the 65 women who were recognized among the nominees for this year’s 97th Academy Awards.
Since 1962, the Women in Film organization has consistently fought for gender equality, offering aid during pivotal moments such as the #MeToo movement, the coronavirus pandemic, labor union disputes, and most recently, the destructive wildfire crises.
2021 saw WIF CEO Kirsten Schaffer address an audience comprising Cynthia Erivo, Monica Barbaro, Diane Warren, “Dune 2” producer Tanya LaPointe among others, stating, “Over the past four years, our industry has faced significant challenges. With these difficulties compounded by issues affecting women, transgender individuals, immigrants, LGBTQ+ community members, and people of color nationwide, it’s clear that we need our supportive community now more than ever. We must redouble our efforts for inclusivity within our community and not falter in our commitment.
On a Friday evening, I found myself at the Wheelhouse in West Hollywood, surrounded by other esteemed nominees for an event. There was Coralie Fargeat, the visionary behind “The Substance,” alongside Erivo, Barbaro, Janty Yates who crafted the costumes for “Gladiator 2,” Emily Kassie, director of “Sugarcane,” Diane Warren and many others.
Schaffer emphasized, “The community forms the core of our organization. Here, individuals collaborate to reshape perceptions, modify business methods, and transform cultures. Our objective is to strive for gender equality, but to attain this, people must feel secure in all aspects – physically, emotionally, and financially.
Schaffer was among the thousands affected by the wildfires and shared that she was part of the 11,500 individuals who had lost their family homes. She emphasized to the audience that WIF had collaborated with the Entertainment Community Fund, saying, “I understand that many of you have already contributed to numerous GoFundMes, the Red Cross, and firefighters, but this crisis is far from over. The recovery period will be lengthy and requires collective effort. I encourage everyone here tonight to contribute to the Entertainment Community Fund.
To wrap up, Schaffer paid tribute to the women and urged them to fortify their connections. He stated that if there’s any gathering or outdoor space filled with individuals who possess the resilience, bravery, and ingenuity to envision a way out of these challenging times, it’s this very gathering.
Following the call, I, a passionate movie enthusiast, found myself witnessing an impressive lineup of Oscar-nominated ladies gracing the stage one after another. Each took a moment to introduce themselves before we all posed together for a memorable photograph.
