On Sunday, often referred to as Hollywood’s grandest night, it’s important to note that this title doesn’t apply outside of the Oscars event itself. As the conclusion of awards season approaches, cinemas are experiencing a subdued weekend. The underwater thriller “Last Breath,” produced by Focus Features, is forecasting a moderate opening of $7.3 million. On the other hand, Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World” is anticipated to keep its top spot for a third consecutive weekend, albeit with a noticeable decline in audience interest.
The movie titled “Last Breath” garnered $3 million during its debut on Friday and previews at 3,018 theaters. This survival thriller, based on a true deep-sea rescue operation, is estimated to bring in $7.3 million during its initial release. Alex Parkinson, who also adapted it from his 2019 documentary of the same name, directs a star-studded cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole. Focus Features secured distribution rights for the film last summer.
The film “Last Breath” has received generally favorable responses and audience feelings are positive, earning a B+ grade from moviegoer pollster Cinema Score. Given that mature dramas have struggled to attract viewers lately, the producers are counting on good reviews to boost the movie’s box office performance and prevent it from stumbling in the coming weeks.
The movie “Last Breath” has been generally well-received, with audiences expressing positive feelings. Cinema Score has given it a B+ grade. Due to the difficulty of selling adult dramas recently, the producers are relying on positive reviews to lift its box office performance and prevent it from experiencing instability in the near future.
Currently, it’s anticipated that “Captain America: Brave New World” will continue to lead at the box office, despite experiencing a significant drop of 68% in its previous outing. This second-weekend decline ranks as one of the sharpest for Marvel Cinematic Universe films, trailing only “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (-69%) and “The Marvels” (-78%) in terms of severity. The film earned $3.6 million on Friday, marking a 50% decrease from its weekly daily gross of $7.2 million.
The movie ‘Brave New World’ is expected to surpass $150 million in domestic earnings by Sunday, surpassing “Eternals”, another relatively underperforming Marvel film with earnings of $164 million. This would place it as the 32nd highest-grossing MCU entry in North America among a total of 35 releases. To avoid finishing in the bottom five for the franchise, ‘Brave New World’ needs to surpass the original 2011 release of “Captain America: The First Avenger” ($176 million) in earnings.
Following a significant drop in rankings, the horror-comedy film “The Monkey” by Neon, is experiencing a steep decrease in its second showing. This downturn comes after it received a relatively mediocre “C+” rating on Cinema Score during its debut. On Friday, the independent release is estimated to have earned approximately $1.8 million, with competitors predicting around $6.2 million for this weekend and a 56% drop compared to its initial weekend. This decline is much steeper than that of director Osgood Perkins’ previous genre film for Neon, “Longlegs,” which also received a “C+” rating on Cinema Score but dropped by only 46%.
Despite not having the same long-term impact, “The Monkey” finds itself in a robust position. Made with approximately $10 million, this Stephen King adaptation could potentially surpass a $24 million domestic gross by the weekend’s end.
On Friday, Sony’s release of “Paddington in Peru” brought in an additional $970,000 and is expected to earn around $4.5 million during its third weekend. The film, produced by StudioCanal, is slightly outperforming Paddington’s previous adventure, “Paddington 2,” which was released in 2017. By Sunday, the total domestic earnings for “Peru” are projected to reach approximately $31 million.
Despite being available as a premium digital rental and having over a month in theaters, Universal’s “Dog Man” is aiming to secure a spot among the top five earners. On Friday alone, it brought in approximately $860,000, and it’s projected to make around $4 million during its fifth weekend. There’s even a possibility that it might exceed $83 million by the end of this week. The DreamWorks Animation film is showing promising numbers.
