One notable aspect of the El Dorado Film Festival is its ongoing commitment to showcasing short films from various global locations. On Day 3, Short Film Block #1 was a standout event, offering a carefully selected assortment of eight short movies that covered an extensive range of styles, subjects, and creative perspectives. The block provided a diverse mix of narratives from directors who expressed their tales across multiple genres such as drama, dark comedy, sci-fi, and beyond.
Here are a few impressions out of the eight films included in the block…

Originates from director, screenwriter, and producer Marta Roncada, “Deliberate” – an impactful and urgent short film delving into predatory relationships without flinching. The film’s raw honesty stems from the personal experiences of its creator. In this thought-provoking piece, Kelly Lou Dennis portrays Alice, a young woman who unexpectedly revisits her former beloved teacher, Mr. Jacobs (Carl Beukes). As their discussion in the classroom deepens, it becomes clear that they had a sexual relationship while she was still his student. Remarkably, Roncada manages to convey both characters’ humanity while skillfully revealing the core of such abuse. This compelling production is sure to resonate with survivors of abuse and spur awareness among others.
VERDICT – 4.5/5

In “Draft Night,” directed by Thomas Glinkowski, we journey through an anxious and pressure-filled night with a promising basketball star (Joseph David-Jones, who exudes charm) as he eagerly awaits his fate in the NBA draft. The young talent portrays a façade of self-assuredness and cockiness. However, beneath this exterior, he grapples with mounting anxiety caused by the heavy burden of expectations from his family, agent, and himself. The film is skillfully crafted, filmed, and edited. Although it occasionally leans towards being too straightforward in its messaging, Glinkowski and screenwriter Shawn Williams invite us to peer beneath the glamour to uncover the young man’s true essence – a lesson that resonates deeply with everyone.
VERDICT – 4/5

In “Detox,” filmmakers Alex Hanno and Wes Hopper delve into the contemporary issue of digital dependency through a blend of horror elements and sharp satire. Just like many others, Shelly (played by Caitlin Morris), spends an excessive amount of time online, engrossed in social media and endless content consumption. In an attempt to break free from this habit, she embarks on a 48-hour “digital detox.” Guided by the advice of a self-help guru (voiced by Bill Prokopow), Shelly secludes herself in a secluded rural house to concentrate solely on her wellbeing. However, an unforeseen event occurs that suggests she – and perhaps many others – require more than a weekend at an Airbnb to conquer their digital addictions. The film is intelligent, thoughtfully constructed, and highly engaging.
