In a fierce competition, Netflix secured the rights for Lena Dunham’s upcoming romantic comedy “Good Sex,” featuring Natalie Portman as the lead actress.
The movie was recently unveiled to potential buyers during the European Film Market last month, by CAA Media Finance and FilmNation. Now, Netflix is reportedly finalizing a global deal worth approximately $55 million – one of the biggest deals to come out of EFM ever.
Lena Dunham, the mind behind “Girls,” is gearing up to pen and direct “Good Sex,” a film where Natalie Portman portrays Ally, a couples therapist in her 40s who reenters New York’s dating scene following a decade-long relationship. However, Ally’s life becomes complicated as she becomes entangled in a passionate romance with a young, hip Brooklynite while also developing a promising relationship with Alan, a successful man in his 50s residing in Manhattan. The storyline reveals that Ally finds herself at a romantic crossroads, which escalates into an identity crisis as she struggles to maintain these two distinct men apart and reconcile her own conflicting desires, fearing she might lose them both.
Portman, along with Sophie Mas, are jointly working on the project titled “Good Sex” under their production house, MountainA. Meanwhile, Dunham and Michael Cohen are producing this venture for their company, Good Thing Going.
Netflix chose not to provide a statement, while FilmNation and CAA have yet to reply to our query for comment from EbMaster.
This year, Dunham is set to debut her upcoming Netflix series titled “Too Much,” having formed a creative alliance with the streaming platform. Additionally, she’s working on a film project centering around Sam Bankman-Fried, a notorious cryptocurrency fraudster, for Apple and A24. This movie is inspired by Michael Lewis’ book “Going Infinite.
More recently, Oscar-winning actress Portman appeared in the critically praised movie “May December,” which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Some of her upcoming projects include “Good Sex,” as well as the Roald Dahl animated comedy “The Twits,” Guy Ritchie’s heist film “Fountain of Youth,” and the thriller “The Gallerist” with Jenna Ortega.
Deadline was the first to report the news of the sale.
