Oh my, it appears there’s a disagreement between Puck and Deadline over whether Kathleen Kennedy, the current president of Lucasfilm who oversees Star Wars projects, is planning to step down from her role. Mike Fleming from Deadline, known for his knack for delving into movie producers’ affairs, conducted an interview with Kathleen Kennedy following a report I made on Monday suggesting that she would be announcing her departure by the end of the year. Matt Belloni from Puck described this exchange as rather unusual in his February 28 newsletter.
On February 24, Puck shared the announcement that Kennedy, aged 72, was intending to resign as president of LucasFilm. For quite some time, Belloni has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with Kennedy, expressing this through written articles and his podcast “The Town.” He’s suggested that Kennedy is mismanaging the Star Wars franchise due to not releasing a film since 2019. In his report discussing Kennedy’s departure, Belloni wrote: “If you ask a leading creator about their experience working with Lucasfilm, they’ll probably share a lot of frustration: vague guidance, indecisiveness, fear of taking creative risks while also being overly devoted to a fanbase that has grown increasingly abrasive.
Three days on, Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline posted an interview with Kennedy, using the preface to counter Belloni’s accusations, despite largely reinforcing Puck’s reporting. In his words, “For years, Belloni has been hassling Kennedy as if she owes him money, and this week he claimed Kennedy was retiring.” However, in the interview, Kennedy herself clarified that while she will never retire from movies, she has indeed been discussing potential succession plans with both Bob [Iger] and Alan [Bergman] for quite some time.
She mentioned that we might unveil our decision several months or even a year from now, and she plans to stay with Lucasfilm to aid the next leader in their success. So, are you suggesting that Kathleen Kennedy is leaving her position as Lucasfilm president?
