Microsoft has revealed that Skype is shutting down for good after 22 years to focus more on Teams.
Initially introduced in 2003, Skype followed the trend of instant messaging platforms such as MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, and lesser-known ones like ICQ, which had already become widely used for online conversations among friends, several years prior to its launch.
In simpler terms, Microsoft’s chat service known as MSN Messenger was transformed into Windows Live Messenger. However, after spending a whopping $8.5 billion in 2011 for Skype, the Seattle-based company aimed to eventually replace Windows Live Messenger with Skype.
Now, on February 28, 2025, Microsoft has announced that Skype is shutting down for good.
Microsoft gives an end date for iconic Skype app
Based on reports from TechCrunch, Microsoft plans to permanently discontinue Skype as of May 5, 2025, in favor of devoting more resources towards the development of Microsoft Teams.
The exact number is unclear, but it’s been estimated that over 36 million individuals utilize Skype on a daily basis, as mentioned in a blog post from 2023.
In simpler terms, Jeff Teper, the head of Microsoft 365’s collaborative apps and platforms, expressed that they acknowledge the significance of Skype for their users and appreciate their support which has contributed to the development of Teams. By now directing all our efforts towards Teams, we can present a clearer message and accelerate innovation more effectively.

As a gamer, I’m excited about transitioning to Teams! I’ll be able to log in using my Skype account, and all of my chats and contacts will seamlessly transfer over. However, TechCrunch mentioned that we can export our data, but it’s uncertain if we’ll be able to import it into an app other than Teams.
Following the announcement about Skype shutting down on social platforms, numerous users expressed their opinions in post comments, suggesting that Discord emerged victorious as the leading messaging service.
