Gene Hackman’s Daughter Says He ‘Was in Good Health’ and ‘There Was No Indication’ of ‘Any Problem’ Before His Death at 95

Leslie Anne Hackman, Gene Hackman’s daughter, shared her thoughts with The Daily Mail following her father’s passing at the age of 95. Despite his advanced years, she stated that he was in excellent physical condition. Sadly, both Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa (aged 63), were found deceased in their Santa Fe, NM residence on Wednesday. Although the authorities do not suspect foul play, they have deemed the circumstances surrounding their deaths as “suspicious” enough to warrant a thorough investigation.

Leslie informed The Daily Mail that before Hackman’s passing, there were no signs of any health issues, leading her to hypothesize that a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning might have contributed to his death.

Although he was quite old, my father maintained exceptional physical fitness,” Leslie pointed out. She went on to mention that during the final months before his passing, there were no significant surgeries involved. His preference leaned towards activities like Pilates and yoga, which he practiced multiple times a week, thus keeping him in peak health.

Since Hackman was 95 years old, Leslie finds it not unexpected. However, Arakawa’s passing at 63 raises more questions. She expressed that they shared a “wonderful marriage,” and she credits his wife, Betsy, for contributing to his longevity.

Leslie mentioned that [Betsy] was incredibly attentive to his well-being and constantly watched over his health. I’m grateful for this and deeply sorrowful about her demise,” Leslie stated.

Two maintenance employees stumbled upon the bodies of Hackman and Arakawa. Arakawa’s lifeless form was on the bathroom floor. An open prescription bottle for pills, with a few spilled nearby, sat on the countertop. Hackman was found in the mud room next to the kitchen, with his sunglasses beside him. It seemed to authorities that both men had fallen down. In addition, a deceased dog was discovered in the bathroom closet close to Arakawa’s body.

Emergency services including the fire department and the gas company were dispatched to investigate a suspected natural gas leak at a residence. The potential issue was concerning as it could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Upon inspection, they found no apparent signs of a gas leak based on their search, as stated in the warrant.
