Fans of Command & Conquer are about to enjoy some exciting news! Electronic Arts (EA) has recently made available the original coding for four beloved C&C games, along with introducing Steam Workshop compatibility and unveiling additional modifying resources for future series installments.
Working together with community developer Luke “CCHyper” Feenan, Electronic Arts (EA) has made public the completely restored source code for the original Command & Conquer (also known as Tiberian Dawn), Command & Conquer Red Alert, Command & Conquer Renegade, and Command & Conquer Generals, including its expansion pack, Zero Hour. The source code for these games can be found on EA’s GitHub page under the GPL license, allowing users to execute, examine, distribute, or alter the software as they see fit.
For the past year, I’ve been partnering with the outstanding stakeholders from C&C at EA to rejuvenate the Perforce source code archives of the C&C games, making them ready for building again. This development enables us to make more substantial updates on these timeless games in the future, as CCHyper expressed about his work with the EA C&C team. As a seasoned modder, it was truly exhilarating to delve into the source code of these games and explore their inner mechanics!
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t contain my excitement over the recent revelation! After more than three decades, the original Command & Conquer has finally seen its source code recovered. CCHyper, in their words, views this as a significant victory for video game preservation. They believe that this decision will empower fan communities to not only keep these iconic games alive but also ensure they remain playable for gaming enthusiasts yet to come.
In addition to unveiling the source code, Electronic Arts (EA) is also distributing additional resources for modders, along with Steam Workshop compatibility for several Command & Conquer (C&C) games. Specifically, this includes C&C Renegade, C&C Generals and Zero Hour, C&C 3 Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath, C&C Red Alert 3 and Uprising, as well as C&C 4 Tiberian Twilight. Furthermore, fans will have the ability to directly upload maps through the Mission Editor and World Builder tools onto Steam Workshop.
Modifiers can make use of a C&C Modding Support Package as well, offering them the original XML, Schema, Script, Shader, and Map files from every Command & Conquer title built on the SAGE engine.
To add a final tribute for enthusiasts of Command & Conquer history, Electronic Arts (EA) has made available about thirty minutes of archival material showcasing the creation process of Renegade and Generals, encompassing technical demonstrations and visual concepts from the original versions of these classic games.
