Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Reveals Lumon’s Sinister Secrets

One intriguing enigma that lies at the heart of Severance revolves around the exact nature of the Operations and Development (O&D) department’s activities. The seventh episode of season 2 sheds light on this question, and the revelations are far more chilling than we had initially imagined.

On one of Lumon’s upper floors resides another significant department known as Optics and Design. Similar to Macrodata Refinement, the nature of its work is both enigmatic and crucial. Prior to his alleged retirement in Season 1 (which we now know was actually a termination… or something far more sinister), Burt G was in charge of this department.

At first glance, it appeared that the division in question was responsible for the artwork adorning the office spaces. However, upon further investigation, Mark and his team discovered that their group was significantly larger than initially assumed. As they ventured toward the back, they observed the O&D staff tending to a variety of items – from hatchets to watering cans.

In the second season of Severance, Irving pays a visit to O&D. During this meeting, Felicia discloses that they previously delivered their goods to the Exports Hall, which served as the entry point to the Testing Floor. This revelation sparked even more questions, but episode 7 sheds light on these mysteries. Be advised: spoilers follow!

Terrifying truth behind O&D and its Ideographic Cards

It appears that without realizing it, the O&D department has been manufacturing and distributing items which Lumon uses for testing its subjects, such as Mark’s wife Gemma. Not only are these materials found within the Exports Hall, but even prior to her staged demise, Gemma received a set of Ideographic Cards from a fertility clinic.

It appears that the Optics and Design team is no longer aware of how their products are being utilized, as they once shipped their goods to the Export Hall but now simply send an employee instead.

In the seventh episode of Severance Season 2 titled ‘Chikhai Bardo’, it’s revealed that the mysterious individual referred to as “that guy” is actually Dr Mauer, a newly introduced adversary in the Apple TV+ series. We discover in this episode why he was amassing dental instruments from O&D in the previous chapter.

It transpires that Gemma is being confined on the Experimentation Area without her consent, where she’s subjected to numerous tests across several examination chambers.

In every room she enters, she assumes a distinct Innie persona. The initial chamber, named ‘Wellington’, subjects her Innie to agonizing dental procedures – and that’s all there is to it. Essentially, her entire existence is one prolonged, excruciating trip to the dentist.

When she emerges, it’s clear that Gemma’s jaw is hurting. Meanwhile, in another room, one of Gemma’s inner selves is continuously writing thank-you notes for Christmas gifts, causing her hand to feel sore. (Or alternatively, when she steps out, it becomes apparent that Gemma’s jaw aches. Simultaneously, in another part of the house, one of Gemma’s alter egos is tasked with consistently writing thank you notes for Christmas presents, resulting in her hand becoming tired.)

Here in the room, it’s evident that the “gifts” originate from the Operations and Delivery (O&D) department, much like the dental supplies do. However, the most intriguing disclosure by far is the significance concealed within the Ideographic Cards.

Looking back at Season 1, I can’t forget the time Dylan snatched a peculiar card from O&D. These cards had strange images that seemed to depict different types of body movements.

Previously, all we were aware of was their significance. In fact, Milchick took the extraordinary step of initiating the Overtime Contingency Protocol in order to retrieve it from Dylan.

Nevertheless, delving into the past of Mark and Gemma reveals that they faced difficulties conceiving due to Gemma’s miscarriage. Opting for In-Vitro Fertilization, their journey brought tension into their relationship.

One evening when Mark returned home from work, he discovered Gemma using the Ideographic Cards, jotting down notes. She informed him that these materials were provided by the fertility clinic.

Months prior, it was before Lumon staged her own demise and Mark’s termination, suggesting that instead of just recruiting applicants, the organization seems to be specifically targeting potential victims.

Unwittingly, I find myself involved in creating instruments that subtly manipulate, inflict distress, and psychologically torture – a chilling realization that extends to MDR, Mammalians Nurturables, and probably every other team on this isolated level.

In their own unique ways, each team seems to be engaged in significant, enigmatic work, but unfortunately, they’re all unwittingly participating in Lumon’s sinister research projects.
