In Episode 7 of Severance‘s second season, we get some much-awaited insights into the character of Gemma; however, a major query is left unanswered, and it might not be something we’d want to hear.
Throughout much of the second series of Severance, we’ve primarily encountered Gemma (alongside Ms. Casey) in brief moments: quick glimpses of her during Mark’s re-integration, and a particularly moving sequence at the end of Episode 5.
In Episode 7, the story primarily delves into Gemma’s encounters on the Testing Floor within Lumon, a place that the Exports Hall directs to. After Mark’s fainting incident in the sixth episode, he finds himself reliving memories in this journey.
In this pivotal scene of the series, we gain insight into the true significance of the MDR team’s documents (with the exception of Cold Harbor), and are introduced to a fresh antagonist, Dr. Mauer. Yet, there remains one unanswered query.
Did Gemma voluntarily go to Lumon, or was she really in a crash?
As stated by Mark, it appears that Gemma met her untimely end in a vehicular collision, and he even confirmed the identity of the deceased. However, during the second season, Mark discovers that Gemma is indeed still alive, leading him to question whether the car accident was genuine or just a deception orchestrated by Lumon.
Towards the end of the episode, there’s a scene that appears to be a flashback to the night when it was thought Gemma had passed away. Instead of joining a gathering, she chooses to leave, while he opts to remain indoors. Later on, two police officers come knocking at his door, delivering unfortunate news.
It’s unclear whether Lumon was involved in an accident that led to her collision with another vehicle and later recovery of her body, or if she voluntarily went to Lumon, unaware that she would become their test subject and end up trapped beneath the earth on her own accord.

The Exports Hall is hiding answers to Severance’s biggest questions
It appears she has a higher probability considering her dedication to Lumon’s fertility center, as they seem to have insidiously woven themselves into her daily life through surveys and symbolic cards.
Besides giving off an impression that she hasn’t been abducted, and not exactly confined like a prisoner (though they clearly don’t want her to leave), she has a strong desire to depart (as seen in the final moments of Episode 7). It’s possible that she consented to some experimental procedure following her miscarriage, a fact she chose to conceal due to the strained relationship with Mark, given their ongoing tension.
It’s no longer just a matter of how – it’s a question of why.
