Meet the Severance Season 2 Villain Who Will Haunt You

In the seventh episode of Severance Season 2, a chilling, crucial figure named Dr. Mauer was unveiled amidst the interactions between Gemma and Mark.

Or

In the 7th episode of Severance Season 2, we were introduced to a significant, mysterious character called Dr. Mauer during the scenes involving Gemma and Mark. This individual seems rather unsettling but plays a pivotal role in the storyline.

It’s important to understand this: The main antagonists in Severance are the Kier family and Lumon Industries. Their demanding loyalty like a cult, and their subtle yet far-reaching impact on various aspects of life, is alarming. For instance, when Gemma fills out a form for a fertility clinic, it bears the Lumon logo; they’re ubiquitous.

Speaking as a devoted fan, I must admit that there have been some truly unsavory characters who’ve crossed my path throughout the series – characters like Doug Graner from Season 1, the relentless enforcer at Lumon. Characters such as Harmony Cobel and Mr. Milchick could easily be labeled as villains, but it’s worth noting that they may not be irredeemable, especially when compared to individuals like Helena Eagan. However, I remain hopeful for their potential transformation.

However, Episode 7 just unveiled one of the show’s most unsettling characters to date.

Who is Dr Mauer?

Dr Mauer, played by Robby Benson, appears to be the head of the Testing Floor in Severance.

In Episode 5, he was playfully mocked upon humming ‘The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald’ following his retrieval of dental tools from O&D. We first have a clear view of him in Episode 7, when Gemma enters the Wellington room, which is where her subconscious self often visits the dentist.

It’s evident that Dr Mauer is the only other individual that Gemma’s subconscious encounters when she enters a room on the Testing Floor. Yet, he adorns various costumes and disguises to distinguish his characters (likely to prevent any confusion of shared memories).

Throughout the episode, Dr Mauer is seen in various forms – as himself in some scenes, and in different roles such as an air steward in one room and her husband on Christmas day in another. He converses with Gemma’s Outie who’s confined within Lumon, seeking to learn about her memories from that particular day at work, any unusual attractions she may have towards certain rooms, and if there are any discomfort or lingering effects she might be experiencing.

Dr Mauer is already a terrifying Severance villain

Despite the fact that we’re not well-versed about Dr. Mauer, particularly his given name, it’s evident that he plays a crucial role in Lumon’s endeavors, particularly in relation to Cold Harbor.

Upon laying eyes on Cold Harbor’s door, I can’t help but inquire from Dr. Mauer about the consequences once I’ve explored each of its chambers. His response, a captivating promise, is, “You’ll re-enter the world, and the world will welcome your return.

He’s additionally formed a somewhat uncomfortable affection for Gemma. At one point, he confides in Mr Drummond by saying, “She’s quite endearing. Naturally, she likes me as well.

In the Christmas-themed room, he compels her to reciprocate by saying “I love you.” Towards the end, he deceives her when she asks to leave, telling her that Mark remarried last year and has a daughter now. He suggests that Gemma has been away for a long time, implying that Mark has moved on. In one of the rooms, he remarks, “Don’t you think?”

In the festively decorated room, he makes her confess her love. Towards the end, he misleads her when she seeks to leave, claiming that Mark got remarried last year and has a child now. He implies that Gemma has been gone for a while and suggests that perhaps both have moved on. In one of the rooms, he inquires, “Don’t you think?

“Maybe you felt things behind those doors you never felt with Mark? Maybe I’ve seen it.”

Not only did it seem unpleasant, but it’s also evident that he had taken an interest in Gemma well before she joined Lumon. During the flashback at the fertility clinic, he was observed casting a glance towards Gemma as he passed by.

Where you’ve seen Robby Benson before

Robby Benson has been seen in shows like American Dreams, Hallmark’s A Feeling of Home, and Exosquad, as well as numerous films from the ’80s and ’90s. Yet, it’s his voiceover work that truly stands out, most notably as the Beast (and the Prince) in the timeless Disney film Beauty and the Beast.

In various Disney productions, such as the House of Mouse series in the 2000s and the upcoming project Once Upon a Studio in 2023, Benson has once again taken on his familiar role.
