For the very first time, “How to Train Your Dragon” is set to debut on screens at CinemaCon, an annual gathering of cinema theater proprietors.
On April 2nd, the grand opening of the movie is scheduled to happen at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. This event will occur over two and a half months before the movie’s theatrical debut on June 13th.
At CinemaCon, which isn’t as grandiose as Cannes, where controversial films might elicit boos or walkouts from the audience, Universal is choosing to debut “How to Train Your Dragon.” This move demonstrates their belief in the film’s potential commercial success. Previously, attendees at CinemaCon have been the first to view Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Warner Bros.’ and DC’s “The Flash.”
CinemaCon isn’t as fancy as Cannes, where some movies might make people boo or leave. But Universal is showing “How to Train Your Dragon” there, which means they think it will do well in theaters. In the past, CinemaCon attendees were the first to see “Top Gun: Maverick” and “The Flash.
Watching “How to Train Your Dragon” as a prelude will generate excitement for the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to hit theaters this summer amidst a crowded schedule. Additionally, other highly anticipated releases scheduled during the peak summer months include Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” (May 2nd), Disney’s remake of “Lilo & Stitch”, Universal’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” (May 23rd), Pixar’s “Elio” (June 20th), Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” (July 2nd), Warner Bros. and DC’s “Superman” (July 11th) and Paramount’s “Smurfs” (July 18th).
Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic theatrical distribution, stated that “How to Train Your Dragon” flawlessly combines high-octane action, stunning graphics, and heartfelt storytelling, creating a cinematic experience like no other. We are excited to collaborate with our exhibition partners in premiering this film initially, as they play a crucial role in bringing this extraordinary journey to audiences globally this summer.
Dean DeBlois, who was in charge of the DreamWorks Animation trilogy (“How to Train Your Dragon” in 2010, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” in 2014, and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” in 2019), is once again taking the helm for the live-action adaptation. Together, these movies brought in a massive $1.6 billion globally and earned four Academy Award nominations.
The animated film “How to Train Your Dragon” is based in the legendary Viking settlement of Berk. It narrates the escapades of a peculiar adolescent named Hiccup, who encounters an injured dragon that he names Toothless. Their unique friendship challenges centuries-old enmity between Vikings and dragons, as they have long been mortal enemies.
I’m elated that Universal Pictures has decided to highlight this summer blockbuster for the worldwide cinema community, as I am. This film seems destined to captivate audiences of all ages from every corner of the globe. The anticipation of watching it unfold on the big screen in my local theater is palpable, and I’m eagerly looking forward to contributing to its promotion within our global exhibition community in the time ahead.
The annual event known as CinemaCon, organized by the National Association of Theatre Owners, is set to take place from March 31st through April 3rd. Some of the biggest studios such as Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Amazon MGM will be present to showcase their upcoming movie lineups.
