Fox Hires Peter Distad, Previously Head of Ill-Fated Venu Sports, as CEO of Direct-to-Consumer Streaming Service

Pete Distad has a new gig after the shutdown of sports-streaming joint venture Venu Sports.

Fox Corporation has appointed Distad to the position of CEO in their newly launched direct-to-consumer streaming sector. Distad previously oversaw Venu Sports, which was closed down by Fox, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery in January. Prior to Venu, he held an executive role at Apple for a decade, following six years at Hulu.

Distad will be under the supervision of Paul Cheesbrough, CEO of Tubi Media Group, and will take charge of all facets related to the forthcoming platform.

On a recent earnings call, Fox executives revealed plans for their forthcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service. This service is designed to expand the influence of Fox News, Fox Sports, and the Fox broadcast network beyond traditional cable TV packages, without providing any specifics on pricing or release date at this time.

Pete is an accomplished leader who brings extensive knowledge of consumer goods to the table, and we’re delighted to welcome him aboard as he takes charge of our latest platform. His history of creativity, effectiveness, and development of top-tier streaming products is self-explanatory, and we have full faith that under his guidance, we will provide an elite service that highlights FOX’s superior content and brands, according to Cheesbrough in a statement.

Distad expressed his enthusiasm about making FOX’s top sports, news, and entertainment content accessible to viewers beyond the typical pay-TV package for the first time, through a brand-new streaming service. By collaborating with our content providers, distribution partners, and technology platforms, we aim to develop and expand an exceptional viewing experience that lets consumers easily watch their favorite FOX shows.

Prior to Venu, Distad had been employed at Apple from 2013 to 2023. During his tenure, he managed the business, operations, and global distribution for Video, Sports, and Apple TV+. Initially, he came on board to head product marketing for the Apple TV hardware product. Before joining Apple, Distad held the position of Senior Vice President of Marketing and Distribution within Hulu’s executive team (2007-2013), and was part of the group that launched the original Hulu platform.
