The Hunter’s Bond With Gemma

In simpler terms, Gemma is the diligent blacksmith who travels with the Hunter’s group during significant hunts. As a Hunter, you’ll find yourself visiting her store quite frequently. Occasionally, you’ll encounter an extra dialogue option where Gemma offers comforting words and encouragement for the Hunter.

It’s also revealed that Hunter and Gemma have a long-standing relationship, dating back perhaps to their childhood years. In the instance where The Black Flame (Nu Udra) disrupts life in Azuz village and halts their activities, it is Gemma who steps up as a source of strength and motivates the villagers to explore other solutions actively.

Following your defeat of Nu Udra and the restoration of the village’s normal operations, a touching scene unfolds where Maki expresses gratitude to Gemma for supporting her during her darkest moments. After their emotional exchange, the Hunter arrives to speak with Gemma at her store.

The Hunter praises Gemma for her solutions to the issues, which made Maki’s face gleam with joy. They exchange friendly banter, noting that young Gemma and Maki bore a resemblance. The Hunter expresses this as:

“The Hunter commends Gemma for resolving the troubles, causing Maki’s face to shine brightly. They share some light-hearted talk about how they were much alike in their younger days, Gemma and Maki.

“And the little girl that used to be a lot like her…Does she approve?”

To this, Gemma replies:

Oh dear, are we actually heading there? It’s hard to imagine little Gemma not bursting into tears of pride, she’d be so incredibly proud.

For the first time in this game, we get a clear look at the Guild’s role. The specific responsibilities of Alma, the handler, are also revealed. In critical situations, the Hunter consistently seeks Alma’s approval before engaging in the “hunt”. As a direct emissary of the Guild, Alma wields significant influence.

Besides their regular bond as hunter and handler, they also have an emotional connection that transcends the ordinary. In the side mission “What We Protect”, Alma, visibly distressed and on the verge of tears, will reveal to the Hunter that a team sent for land survey has intruded into Blangonga territory, putting all researchers at risk.

Here, Alma accepts responsibility for something and remains distressed even after the Hunter slays the monster. In this moment, the Hunter soothes and comforts Alma, demonstrating the significant growth in their relationship during their adventure through Monster Hunter Wilds.
