Sega to hold three lectures at GDC 2025, discussing Metaphor: ReFantazio and Like A Dragon

At this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, Sega has planned to conduct three talks, focusing on “Metaphor: ReFantazio” and “Like a Dragon”. Unfortunately, it appears that these sessions won’t be live-streamed; however, Sega may release information about them at a later time.

Developing ‘Metaphor: ReFantazio’ and the Potential of RPG Command Battle Systems

  • This talk will explore how traditional command battle RPGs, once thought outdated, have been modernized in recent releases. We’ll delve into the transformative choices made to bring the director’s concept to life as a top-tier game system, and discuss the testing methods employed to gather data for more efficient and economical balance tweaks, using “Metaphor: ReFantazio” as our case study.

  • In this session, Koji Ise, our lead interface designer, will unveil the creative process behind the user interface (UI) style for the game “Metaphor: ReFantazio.” He’ll share his unique artistic approach, emphasize the role of UI design in enhancing gameplay, discuss challenges encountered during development, and reveal strategies used to distinguish Metaphor from Persona.

The Secret to Narrative-Driven and Short-Term Development in ‘Like a Dragon’

  • As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about learning directly from two veteran developers of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. They will enlighten us from their unique perspectives on game design and visual design, shedding light on the remarkable ability of the Like a Dragon and Yakuza series to consistently produce engaging narrative-driven games in such a brief timeframe.
