Other titles like “Fools Gold,” “Bride Wars,” and “Something Borrowed” fared even worse, with Rotten Tomatoes scores below 15%. Roger Ebert famously penned a scathing review of “How to Lose a Guy,” suggesting that Hudson and her co-star Matthew McConaughey should be placed in the “witness protection program” due to his belief that the movie was that bad.

Hudson remarked, “It seems to me that the type of critic has evolved. In today’s film industry, critics scrutinizing movies with a specific lens may not always align with what audiences desire. Essentially, the role of a critic has transformed; now, it seems everyone is a critic. When creating a movie intended to evoke certain feelings, I like to visualize it as a spectrum: Who are you catering to? Are you making it for the critics or for the audience? The aim should be to create the best movie you can, while telling the story you want to tell. If you’re focusing on pleasing someone specific, you might miss the mark.
Hudson stated, ‘If I were intending to create a ‘Bride Wars’ or ‘Something Borrowed’ film that would be critically acclaimed, perhaps even earning an Oscar nomination, it would look quite different.’ Furthermore, she believes that people underestimate the challenges involved in producing and appreciating a movie like these.
Last year on “Watch What Happens Live”, Hudson expressed her willingness to reprise her role in a potential sequel of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. She stated, “What truly matters is the script and if Matthew and I feel good about it. I believe we’re both open; it just hasn’t come together yet.
In the past few years, romantic comedy films have shifted primarily to streaming services. However, the genre’s ability to draw large audiences was demonstrated by the $220 million global earnings of “Anyone But You,” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Last year on “The View,” Hudson commented that one factor contributing to the decline of rom-coms is the difficulty in persuading male movie stars to participate in them.
