In ‘The Captive,’ we delve into the story of Miguel de Cervantes, a 28-year-old man who finds himself captured by the Moors while in Algiers.
The movie takes place in 1575. A 28-year-old Spanish sailor named Miguel de Cervantes, who’s been injured in battle, finds himself captured by pirates from the Ottoman Empire and imprisoned in Algiers. With his life hanging in the balance as his countrymen struggle to pay his ransom on time, he faces a grim fate. However, within the four walls of his cell, Cervantes stumbles upon an unexpected sanctuary – the craft of storytelling.
The tales he spun mesmerized his fellow prisoners, even grabbing the attention of the mysterious and feared Bey of Algiers, Hasan, sparking a unique bond between the captor and the captured. As unease simmers within the city, driven by escalating tensions, Cervantes, fueled by an unshakable hope, concocts a bold strategy to secure his freedom.
In the movie, Julio Peña, known for “Berlin” and “Through My Window,” acts alongside Alessandro Borghi, recognized for “The Eight Mountains” and “Supersex.” Alex Catalán handles the cinematography, Juan Pedro de Gaspar is responsible for production design, Nicoletta Taranta takes care of costume design, Carolina Martínez edits the film, visual effects are by Ana Rubio, and Amenábar provides the music.
The movie is jointly produced by Fernando Bovaira from Mod Producciones, Himenóptero, and Misent Producciones, in collaboration with Propaganda Italia. It also receives contributions from Netflix, RTVE, and RAI Cinema, and enjoys support from ICAA, Generalitat Valenciana, and Eurimages.
