Netflix Viewing Up 5% in Second Half of 2024, ‘Squid Game 2’ Leads as Most-Watched TV Series

In the latter part of 2024, Netflix viewers watched an unprecedented amount of content compared to any other period, with the second installment of the globally popular Korean series “Squid Game” being the most-watched television program on the platform.

In the second half of 2024, viewers of the streamer watched a total of over 94 billion hours on Netflix, which represents a 5% rise compared to the same period in the previous year, as stated in their most recent Engagement Report detailing content consumption from July to December.

In the second half of 2021, ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 emerged as Netflix’s most popular series with a staggering 87 million views. The total hours watched for these viewings are divided by the runtime to determine the number of views. The Engagement Report, released biannually by Netflix, accounts for approximately 99% of all viewing time on the platform. (Check out the lists below for the top 10 shows and movies currently streaming on Netflix.)

To put it simply, no individual title on Netflix makes up more than 1% of its overall viewership. For instance, “Squid Game 2” represented just 0.7% of global viewing. This is why Netflix prioritizes investing in diverse high-quality series and movies, aiming to ensure that members find something compelling each time they log in, press play, and keep watching. They expressed this in a blog post on Wednesday.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but notice the captivating allure of animated films that have been consistently grabbing our attention. In the latter part of the year, an impressive 10 out of 25 top-grossing movies were animated! These included “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” (earning a staggering 67 million), “Trolls Band Together” (61M), “That Christmas” (60M), “Sing” (58M) and “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie” (56M). These numbers speak volumes about the enduring charm and popularity of animated cinema!

Crime stories that depict real-life events continue to captivate viewers, drawing audiences of over 3 million each for series like The Menendez Brothers, American Murder: Laci Peterson, Worst Ex Ever, Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter, and The Lost Children.

Approximately one-third of all Netflix viewing is dedicated to non-English programming, with Norway’s La Palma (52 million views) and Mexico’s The Accident (41 million views) being among the most popular series in the latter half of the year. Additionally, we observed rising popularity for shows such as Family Pack from France (41 million views), The Empress S2 from Germany (19 million views), Senna from Brazil (15 million views), and One Hundred Years of Solitude from Colombia (9 million views).
