Experience Pink Floyd’s Epic Pompeii Concert in IMAX and New Live Album Release!

In April 24th, cinemas will be showing a restored version of Pink Floyd’s 1972 concert film/documentary titled “Pink Floyd at Pompeii — MCMLXXII” on Imax and other screens. Following closely on May 2nd, the soundtrack from this historic performance will be released as an official live album for the first time, standing alone.

Trafalgar Releasing and Sony Music Vision are planning to re-release the film in cinemas, now with an upgraded 4K digital remaster that utilizes the original 35mm footage. The renowned remixer, Steven Wilson, has worked on a new Dolby audio mix for the movie’s soundtrack, which is popular among classic rock enthusiasts.

The album recorded live during the movie’s screening will be released one week later, coinciding with its cinema rerelease. This release is being handled by Legacy, Sony’s catalog division, across various formats such as CD, vinyl, digital audio, and Dolby Atmos. Notably, this is the first time the film’s music has been sold independently. Previously, it was only available as a single CD included in a larger retrospective box set from the 2010s.

Lana Topham, Pink Floyd’s restoration director, expressed her excitement: “Ever since 1994, I’ve been on a quest to find the hard-to-find film footage of ‘Pink Floyd at Pompeii.’ The recent unearthing of the original 1972 35mm cut negative was truly a unique and memorable occasion. This newly revitalized edition offers the complete 90-minute cut, merging the initial 60-minute performance edit with additional documentary segments from Abbey Road Studios that were captured shortly afterward.

The featured segments from the documentary show the band at work in the recording studio, creating their iconic album “The Dark Side of the Moon,” released in 1973. This album catapulted them to a broader arena of fame and popularity.

The songs performed live at Pompeii, which were filmed before the recording of “Dark Side,” span from Pink Floyd’s debut album to their “Meddle” release and beyond. This footage was captured in 1971 within the ruins of the ancient Roman Amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy.

Tickets for the film screening become available starting March 5, 6 a.m. Pacific Time (or 9 a.m. Eastern Time), and they can be purchased from pinkfloyd.film. The movie will be shown not only on regular screens but also in the IMAX format.

Regarding the remixed audio for the film, Steven Wilson expressed that Pink Floyd has always been his favorite band since his father indoctrinated him as a child by playing The Dark Side of the Moon repeatedly. For him, Pink Floyd is like the Beatles, deeply embedded in his musical genetics. He first encountered Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema, which left an indelible impression on him due to its unrestrained and exploratory rock music created by four musicians who symbolized the idea of intellectual cool. It was a privilege for him to remix the soundtrack to complement Lana Topham’s remarkable restoration of the film, which appears as if it were filmed just yesterday.
