10 Live-Service Games Made Up More Than 40% Of Last Month’s US Playtime On PlayStation And Xbox

Live-service games play a significant and lasting role within the gaming community, as recent statistics from last month reveal. According to a report by Circana, over 40% of all gameplay time on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles was dedicated to the top ten live-service games in the United States during January.

According to Circana’s executive director Mat Piscatella, over 70% of active PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S gamers in the U.S. played at least one of the top ten live-service games last January. This could mean that players just started the game and switched to something else, but the fact that more than 40% did so is quite impressive, indicating how concentrated gaming activity is among a limited number of popular titles.

Piscatella pointed out that this statistic underscores the challenge faced by new games as they vie for attention against established classics. Notably, total US market spending, player numbers, and playtime all reached their maximum in 2021. While the specific titles of the top 10 live-service games weren’t explicitly mentioned in the report, Piscatella’s subsequent charts hint at potential contenders such as Call of Duty HQ, Fortnite, GTA V, NBA 2K25, Marvel Rivals, Roblox, Minecraft, and Madden NFL 25. Other live-service games that frequently appear in the top console list include EA Sports College Football 25, Destiny 2, Apex Legends, and Rocket League.

The remarkable achievement of these online-based games has profoundly affected the entire gaming industry, prompting numerous large publishers to pursue a lucrative live-service triumph in the upcoming years. This pursuit, however, has not been without its setbacks; for instance, Sony’s sci-fi shooter Concord, which closed after only two weeks due to insufficient player participation, resulting in its studio’s eventual closure as well. Recently, Ubisoft announced their commitment to expanding their focus on live-service and open-world games.
