Get ready to step into the TARDIS once more! The second season of “Doctor Who” starring Ncuti Gatwa is just about here, and we’ll be joined by Alan Cumming on this exciting journey.
On Wednesday, it was announced that a brand new time-traveling and space odyssey will debut on Disney+ in the United States at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET on April 12, while BBC and BBC iPlayer viewers in the U.K. will get to see it first. Subsequent episodes from this eight-part season will be released weekly following the initial premiere.
In the upcoming second season for Gatwa as The Doctor, Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu, will be introduced as a new companion. Alongside her, Millie Gibson’s character Ruby Sunday from Season 1 will also return. As per the plot summary of this season, “The Doctor encounters Belinda Chandra and embarks on an extensive journey to bring her back to Earth. However, a strange power obstructs their journey home, forcing The Doctor and the TARDIS crew to confront greater perils, more formidable adversaries, and horrors beyond their wildest imaginations than ever before.
In the upcoming second episode of “The Traitors,” host Cumming will appear as Mr. Ring-a-Ding, a lively, humorous, and musical character from Sunny Town who sings along with his friend Sunshine Sally, according to a press release. However, in 1952, after decades of being shown in cinemas nationwide, Mr. Ring-a-Ding unexpectedly looks beyond the screen and discovers the real world, which has dire consequences. This is Cumming’s reappearance in the Whoniverse following his portrayal of King James I in the 2018 episode “The Witchfinders.
Russell T Davies, the showrunner, praised Alan Cumming by stating that no one else could infuse a runaway cartoon with as much intelligence, mischief, peril, and amusement. He described how Cumining makes the ‘Doctor Who’ universe even wilder and crazier than before, and it’s an immense privilege to have him join the TARDIS crew.”
“Russell T Davies, in his capacity as showrunner, executive producer, and writer, commended Alan Cumming for imbuing a cartoon with such wit, malice, danger, and fun. He went on to say that Cumming’s addition makes the ‘Doctor Who’ universe more unpredictable and eccentric than ever before, and it is truly an honor to have him join the TARDIS team.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, let me share that some of the stars joining this upcoming production are Rose Ayling-Ellis, Christopher Chung, Anita Dobson, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Susan Twist. Alongside Davies, “Doctor Who” is overseen by Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter as executive producers, produced by Bad Wolf in collaboration with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television, BBC One, and BBC iPlayer.
