Channing Tatum’s Axed Gambit Movie Was a ‘Screwball Romantic Comedy,’ Says Lizzy Caplan: ‘It’s Kind of Odd That It Got Scrapped’

It turns out that Channing Tatum’s abandoned Gambit film was intended to be a “quirky romantic comedy,” as Lizzy Caplan recently shared with Business Insider. Back in November 2017, EbMaster reported that Caplan had joined Tatum’s long-gestating project as the female lead, but specifics were not widely known at that time. For years, Tatum worked tirelessly to bring a Gambit movie to life, but unfortunately, the project came to an end when Disney completed their acquisition of Fox in 2019.

Caplan expressed his viewpoint on the abandoned Gambit movie, stating, “That was a truly fascinating concept.” He found it peculiar that the production was canceled. Typically, such films don’t get terminated, but this one did.

Caplan commented on the scrapped Gambit film, saying it had an intriguing premise. It seemed unusual for a movie like that to be halted. Usually, those projects continue, but in this case, they didn’t.

We headed out on our journey, planning to film it,” she explained further. “I believe there was a set start date. I had discussions with Channing, and there were several variations… we had a director initially, but then lost him, however, I had numerous meetings with Channing and other producers. They were considering a 1930s-style romantic comedy with a twist, which sounded quite entertaining.

In 2022, Tatum disclosed to EbMaster that he had become “distressed” following numerous years spent attempting to produce a Gambit film, which ultimately got canceled. He further mentioned, “I deactivated my Marvel engine. I haven’t been able to watch any of the movies. I cherished that character. It was just heartbreaking. It felt like losing a friend because I was so eager to portray him.

Fans of Marvel have long been waiting for Channing Tatum to portray Gambit on the big screen, and his unexpected appearance in last year’s Marvel hit “Deadpool & Wolverine” made this dream a reality. Many comic book movie enthusiasts felt that Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit was one of the film’s highlights. Overjoyed by the opportunity, Tatum posted an emotional message on social media during the film’s release.

Initially, I believed Gambit was gone for good. However, [Reynolds] stepped up and fought for me and Gambit. His actions have left me indebted to him, perhaps forever. I’m unsure if there’s anything I could ever do that would match the significance of this experience. Buddy, I love you…I’m incredibly thankful to be part of this movie. In my opinion, it’s a masterpiece and pure, badass excitement. I was actually shouting in the theater from joy.

Fans eagerly anticipated Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which fueled calls for a solo Gambit film. In an interview with EbMaster, the actor expressed his long-standing desire for such a project: “I’ve been asking for it for the past ten years. It’s now up to Bob Iger and Kevin Feige. I can only hope.

Actor Ryan Reynolds, who played Deadpool, shared with Entertainment Weekly that Marvel’s leaders are very enthusiastic about Channing Tatum, though it remains unclear if this will lead to the production of a Gambit film.

Reynolds shared that he’s not privy to the inner workings of Marvel’s bookkeeping meetings, but he’s certain they have a strong affinity for him in his specific role. This reminds him of his own experience. Once you demonstrate something works effectively, that seems to be what they’re looking for. At times, they simply need to witness it being executed.
