Keith Olbermann, who ruled MSNBC as the host of “Countdown” from 2003 to 2011, spoke out against the network (through The Daily Beast) after they ended their relationships with hosts Joy Reid, Alex Wagner, Katie Phang, Jonathan Capehart, and Ayman Mohyeldin. He wrote on X: “The MSNBC purge was so racially biased it seems as though it could have been orchestrated by Musk.
They didn’t bother concealing their racial bias when they dismissed a seemingly unjustified white news host, such as Katy Tur or Stephanie Ruhle, under the pretense of something else,” he stated further.
On his “Countdown” podcast, Olbermann further discussed the issue by stating: “When a business is facing hardship, when profits may not be made, you won’t find silence from figures like Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O’Donnell, Chris Hayes, Symone Sanders, Michael Steele, Alicia Menendez, or Jen Psaki. I deeply apologize to anyone at MSNBC who speaks out in support of Joy Reid and says, ‘This is unjust. This is perpetuating the entirety of the Trump-inspired racism that’s engulfing our nation.’
Before tuning into my fellow film enthusiast Rachel Maddow’s February 24th show on MSNBC, I was struck by Keith Olbermann’s earlier comment. In her broadcast, Rachel didn’t shy away from voicing her displeasure about the network’s decision to part ways with our esteemed colleague, Joy Reid. She passionately expressed her feelings on air: “I hate to see her leave MSNBC as a fellow broadcaster, and I believe it’s an unfortunate move for us to let her go.”
Moreover, she didn’t mince words when she criticized the network for having only two non-white hosts in primetime, both of whom are now losing their shows. Rachel deemed it “unjustifiable” under the circumstances.
Olbermann commented further, stating that MSNBC’s dismissal of Joy Reid was undeniably rooted in racism. He pointed out that they have only ever given four women of color the opportunity to host their own shows, and now, regrettably, they have let go of all of them.
Once again, in a recent post, Olbermann expressed agreement with Don Lemon by telling Megyn Kelly to express herself less politely, using a strong phrase that could be interpreted as “go take a hike.” This was in response to some critical comments Kelly made about Reid after his departure from MSNBC. In her comments, Kelly referred to Reid as the “most annoying person on television.
