For a long while, there was uncertainty among fans about whether Marvel Studios would resurrect “Daredevil” on Disney+ following its Netflix stint. The cast shared similar doubts about the possibility.
“I used to be quite skeptical,” Deborah Ann Woll, who portrays lawyer Karen Page, admitted during an interview with EbMaster on Monday evening when asked if she thought Disney would revive the action-packed superhero series. “I was convinced it wouldn’t return.”
However, as the poster quote suggests, “the devil’s work is never truly finished,” and the show made a comeback. The magnitude of Marvel’s revival series was evident at its New York premiere, which took place at Disney’s spacious new headquarters in SoHo. This event marks the second time Disney has held a red carpet occasion at the Robert A. Iger Building, following the “Beatles ’64” premiere last November.
The initial “Daredevil” series on Netflix (from 2015-2018) featured Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a lawyer by day with an unyielding passion for justice and a crime-fighting vigilante at night, despite his blindness. The upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” was initially planned as a new interpretation of the character, only loosely connected to the original series. However, during production, Marvel made significant changes, appointing Dario Scardapane, known for his work on “The Punisher,” as showrunner to align it more closely with the atmosphere of the Marvel-Netflix universe.
Scardapane didn’t exactly label it Season 4, but he did say it was undeniably a follow-up. We’re moving these characters ahead by seven to eight years. It’s just as much a new world as it is when you grow up over that period, and we all move into the future. So, while it retains all the original show’s characteristics and history, it’s leading us on a fresh journey.
The DNA of “Daredevil” is marked by its gritty intensity, as evidenced in its early episodes such as the one-take hallway fight and Vincent D’Onofrio’s portrayal of Kingpin, which pushed the limits of comic book TV. Charlie Cox hints at sequences in the new season that are at least on par with these intense moments. However, D’Onofrio suggests that this season will surpass those boundaries even more.
Charlie performed several scenes, including one standout moment, that I wasn’t sure would be included in the series,” D’Onofrio hinted. “However, they’re indeed part of the show! Viewers are in for a treat.
Michael Gandolfini, who matured alongside the initial show, is now assuming the role of the ethically troubled apprentice to the Kingpin in the revival. As an enthusiast, Gandolfini paid respects to Disney for acknowledging the series’ brutal aspects.
Initially, Gandolfini shared similar apprehensions as many fans. He wondered, “Will this new phase maintain the same intensity? Will it be as gritty?” But I assure you, they do. In fact, they push the darkness even further, which is a relief. As Marvel integrates Daredevil’s urban crime universe into their extensive cinematic tapestry, characters such as the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) are rejoining the fray. Scardapane even hinted at more characters from Marvel-Netflix making an appearance in Season 2, filming for which starts this Friday.
However, they’re also incorporating elements from the main Marvel Universe with newcomers like the Swordsman (Tony Dalton), a character known for his lighter approach, as seen in “Hawkeye.
Dalton remarked, “This feels more raw.” He continued, “Compared to ‘Hawkeye’, it seemed geared towards children. However, this one is undoubtedly two men engaging in intense combat. And I must admit, I’m really enjoying it.
Next month, I’ll be part of the filming crew for “Avengers: Doomsday,” the first act of Marvel’s epic conclusion to the Multiverse Saga, alongside the second season of “Born Again.” As a fan of Daredevil, I can’t help but wonder if the team will venture beyond Hell’s Kitchen for this cosmic battle. The cast seems divided on this decision.
Space uneasiness makes me feel jittery,” Woll remarked, “I’m as out of place as a middle-schooler at a high school event. It helps me cope if I can convince myself we’re merely putting on a small production.
Yet Cox and D’Onofrio, smirks in place, are fully on board.
“I want to do it all, I love it all,” Cox said. “So as long as they’ll have me, I’m there.”
