8BitDo has revealed their latest offering, the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, compatible with PC and Android devices. This new pro-style gamepad is now ready for shipping. The Ultimate 2 retails at $60 and comes in three vibrant hues: white, black, or purple. Orders made on the launch day (February 25) can be delivered as early as tomorrow with Amazon Prime. The Ultimate 2 serves as a sequel to 8BitDo’s original flagship Ultimate Controller, boasting their most extensive set of features yet.

Although we haven’t tried the latest model, the Ultimate 1 remains our number one choice among the best PC controllers. We eagerly anticipate assessing the improved version of a controller that was already exceptional.

The Upgraded 2 Controller boasts several impressive advancements. 8BitDo has upgraded its 2.4GHz wireless technology and calls it “8Speed.” When paired wirelessly through the included USB-C dongle, the Upgraded 2 is said to provide nearly flawless input recognition with a latency of just 1ms. Interestingly, this model also offers a polling rate of 1,000Hz when using 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired connections, which was not available in the original Ultimate Controller. To clarify, the initial Ultimate offered a reliable and swift wireless connection, but it seems that the new version could perform even better. Additionally, this is the first Ultimate Controller to use a USB-C dongle instead of USB-A. On Android devices, the Upgraded 2 connects via Bluetooth.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that 8BitDo has swapped out the Hall Effect sticks on their controllers with TMR sticks. Just like Hall Effect sticks, TMR technology uses electromagnets to deliver a smoother, more accurate feel during gameplay. The electromagnetic controls also help reduce the risk of analog stick drift. Although they share similarities, many consider TMR technology an upgrade compared to the Hall Effect tech. To top it off, these new sticks come with customizable RGB lighting rings!

8BitDo’s The Ultimate 2 is the initial controller in the series to boast four additional control keys. By merging the designs of the original Ultimate and the latest budget wireless controller, the Ultimate 2C, it now offers two reconfigurable rear triggers, similar to the original Ultimate, along with two extra shoulder buttons akin to the Ultimate 2C.

8BitDo has incorporated a typical professional customization option, known as trigger locks, into the Ultimate 2. By flipping the switches situated at the back, the Hall Effect analog sticks can swiftly transform into linear buttons.

Beyond its physical changes, the Ultimate 2 also works with 8BitDo’s exclusive software on PC and Android devices. With the latest Ultimate Software V2, you can set up to three user profiles and customize settings for sticks, triggers, motion controls, sensitivity levels, rumble intensity, and even define analog stick dead zones.

8BitDo’s top-tier series’ latest addition, the Ultimate 2, includes a USB-C charging dock that matches the controller, featuring a compartment to keep the USB dongle. The exact playtime you can expect from a full charge isn’t specified, but the Ultimate 2’s battery is significantly larger than the original’s, boasting a capacity of 1,000mAh compared to the 480mAh batteries in the regular Ultimate and Switch-compatible Ultimate Bluetooth models. The original Ultimate and Ultimate Bluetooth provided 15 and 22 hours of gameplay respectively, suggesting that the new model could potentially outperform these already impressive numbers.

1. Currently, the drawback with the Ultimate 2 is that it’s only available for PC and Android devices. However, since the original Ultimate 2.4GHz Controller eventually became compatible with Apple devices, there’s a chance that the sequel might follow suit.

8BitDo usually releases Nintendo Switch versions of its Ultimate Controllers, so we could potentially see a sequel to the Ultimate Bluetooth controller designed for the Switch, which is our top pick for the best third-party Nintendo Switch controller.
