2023 Season 2 is off to a strong start, and it’s evident that this spin-off might surpass Taylor Sheridan’s original show in a significant aspect.
In November 2024, we find ourselves in the midst of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2. The last six episodes of this popular Western series were filled with tension. John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, was no longer around. A multitude of spin-offs were stacking up on the desk of the show’s creator. It was crucial to bring this phase of the Yellowstone universe to a close swiftly and effectively.
Essentially, the ending felt like an overcrowded, hastily resolved sequence of events with underdeveloped characters – a quick-boil conclusion to seven years of Dutton family history. By its end, Yellowstone left many viewers with a disappointing aftertaste, having anticipated it for so long.
In simple terms, the second (and potentially final) season of the prequel series set in the era before the Great Depression, titled 1923, is now underway. Although it may not match the grandeur of the original series, it has a significant job on its hands to complete this historical narrative effectively. To achieve success, it merely needs to distinguish itself from Yellowstone by adopting a unique approach or perspective.
Yellowstone wrecked its own ending
Initially, let’s discuss why the finale of Yellowstone didn’t live up to expectations. Firstly, it’s important to note that Part 2 wasn’t intended to be the final chapter. However, when news broke about Kevin Costner’s departure from the show, the future of Yellowstone became uncertain. Soon after, Paramount revealed that their Western epic was wrapping up earlier than expected.
As a gamer, let me tell you, condensing a gripping season filled with cliffhangers into just six episodes would’ve been next to impossible. My pals John and Beth were readying for an intense showdown against Jamie, who was equally prepared for the battle of his life. Meanwhile, Rip and some of the ranch hands were out in Texas, putting their hearts and souls into saving the livestock we had left behind. To make matters worse, our beloved ranch was standing precariously on the brink of financial collapse. It was a real nail-biter, let me tell you!

As a passionate gamer, I’d confidently say that if the storyline continued, we were in for a ride spanning a few more seasons. The first half of Season 5 didn’t signal an end; instead, it served as a powerful takeoff point for a whole lot more exciting adventures that lay ahead.
However, the main issue with Yellowstone’s last seasons lay in the fact that a significant number of its characters were located in another state. With Rip and his team establishing themselves at the 6666 ranch, it resulted in reduced interaction among the most engaging characters, consequently diminishing the overall drama.
To make matters even more disappointing for me as a fan, Beth, Kayce, and Jamie rarely shared significant screen time together in the series.
As a result, the final half of Yellowstone felt stunted, unimportant, and empty.
1923 Season 2 still has a chance
Gladly, 1923 is in a much healthier state now. From the get-go, Sheridan had made it clear that he saw the prequel series as a two-season journey. Though there might be an unexpected third season announcement (after all, we’re in the Duttonverse – you just never know), this specific chapter of the Duttons seems to have been planned as concise and engaging from the start.
Absolutely, there’s still a chance for things to go awry. What we truly hope for in the second season of “1923” is to witness Spencer and Alexandra coming back together and embarking on a new life at the ranch (but it seems unlikely that this will happen according to the first episode).
1923 can avert Yellowstone’s greatest danger by assembling the primary characters (Spencer, Alex, Jacob, Cara, Jack, and Elizabeth) in one location prior to the series finale. Essentially, what makes Yellowstone captivating (apart from the numerous gunfights and sharp-tongued remarks, naturally) is its ranch and the individuals who inhabit it. When Season 5 Part 2 strayed from this formula, it began to lose its way.
It appears the solution is quite straightforward: Bring Spencer and Alex back to the Dutton Ranch immediately. Let Spencer reconnect with his loved ones, while Alex adjusts to this unforeseen environment. Given the interconnectedness of the Dutton family lineage, we’re confident they’ll arrive there in due course – let’s witness their journey!
