As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a pang as Striking Distance Studios, the innovative team behind The Callisto Protocol (2022) and the yet-to-be-revealed Redacted (2024), has experienced another wave of layoffs. This news comes after a series of cuts in 2023. I eagerly await updates on their future projects and hope for their continued success.
According to Striking Distance, they have made a decision to “shrink their workforce” in order to maintain flexibility. The announcement also highlighted that these layoffs are aimed at creating a “long-term viable setting” within the studio during the “ongoing phase of development on future ventures.
Currently, there are no announced upcoming games from Striking Distance. However, it’s important to note that the company continues to operate, and the recent layoffs will not affect their ongoing support for existing projects.
“No further changes are planned at this time,” Striking Distance said to close out its statement.
Regarding the extent of the job reductions, it’s still unclear, however, a source at 80 Level reported that one affected employee mentioned that “the majority of developers were let go.
Striking Distance has zero open positions listed on its careers page.
In 2022, The Callisto Protocol was unveiled, initially intended to be a spin-off from PUBG, but the plans changed and it evolved into its own unique game. Regrettably, the game didn’t receive significant critical or commercial acclaim upon release. Following The Callisto Protocol, Striking Distance introduced Redacted in October 2024, which shares the same sci-fi horror setting. Similar to its predecessor, Redacted didn’t set the world alight, either, as it struggled to garner positive review scores or high sales figures. Its peak concurrent player count on Steam was 168.
It has been shared that Striking Distance is developing a high-quality, third-person multiplayer game utilizing the Unreal Engine 5.
Founded by Glen Schofield, renowned for his contributions to the Dead Space and Call of Duty series, Striking Distance has been his creative home until 2023, when he parted ways with the company. Now, he’s generating excitement about an as-yet undisclosed project.
Over the past several years, job cuts in the gaming sector have happened multiple times, and this negative pattern persists into 2025. Teams like Marvel Rivals US, Crytek, and BioWare are just a few examples of those affected by these layoffs so far.
