According to EbMaster’s confirmation, ON Animation Studios – a Montreal-based studio owned by Mediawan and known for productions like “Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie,” “The Little Prince,” and “Playmobil the Movie” – has been closed down.
In 2012, animation studio ON, founded by producers Aton Soumache (“Little Nicholas”) and Dimitri Rassam (“The Count of Monte Cristo”), was established. Five years later, it was acquired by Mediawan. Since then, ON has grown to become a significant animation studio in Montreal, drawing in skilled animators from around the globe. This growth was fueled by a steady stream of projects based on well-known intellectual properties, including “Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie,” one of the most-watched French animated films globally; and “The Little Prince,” which screened at Cannes Film Festival, won a Cesar Award, and was recognized by the British Academy Children’s Awards.
Ontario Animation Studios was among the many studios that took advantage of Quebec’s appealing tax incentive, transforming the region into a bustling hub for animation and attracting both Hollywood and European productions. However, this scenario shifted dramatically when Quebec’s conservative administration imposed a 65% cap on eligible expenses for international films in their tax scheme, leading to a significant reduction of 28% in tax credits, effective from May 2024.
In light of shifts within our field, ON Animation Studios is closing its operations. It’s hard to bid farewell to a team as extraordinary, gifted, and proficient as ours. We will truly miss the fun and inspiration that came from producing exceptional films with such talented individuals and collaborators,” ON Animation stated on their LinkedIn page.
“We are thankful for the chance to pursue our passion for so many years while staying authentic. The way we connected, learned, and evolved together, and the mutual respect and concern we showed one another, were just as vital as the tales we spun and the principles they upheld,” the company expressed further.
Meanwhile, Mediawan informed EbMaster that the company plans to carry on creating and manufacturing animated feature projects through its Paris-based division, Mediawan Kids & Family, as well as Miraculous Corp, a new joint venture between Mediawan and Zag, the animation studio behind “Miraculous.” They also intend to team up with various animation studios in different locations based on the financing source and talent involved.
The way animation companies like On are collapsing isn’t a solitary event. Just this week, a heavyweight in the Visual Effects (VFX) sector, Technicolor, announced its closure. Technicolor is a global entity that employs thousands of visual effects professionals across countries such as the U.S., UK, Canada, and India. This conglomerate includes top VFX studios like MPC (“Mufasa,” “The Lion King”), commercial VFX brand The Mill, Mikros Animation, and Technicolor Games.
