Charles Finch’s Production Company Rabbit’s Foot Unveils Short Film Division With Sister Magazine (EXCLUSIVE)

The movie and cultural publication titled “A Rabbit’s Foot,” launched by the influential British producer Charles Finch, who is renowned for hosting some of the glitziest award season events filled with A-list celebrities, has teamed up with its sister production company, Rabbit’s Foot Films, to establish a division dedicated to producing short films.

The announcement is made following the reveal of the victors in a worldwide short film contest that was introduced last year as a means to unearth fresh filmmaking talent globally. Their aim is to collaborate with these winners to produce not only short films but also extended content.

From now on, A Rabbit’s Foot media platform will share brief movies, whereas Rabbit’s Foot Productions collaborates with a magazine to create a collection of unique short films.

Finch’s Standalone Pictures has recently changed its name to Rabbit’s Foot Films, reflecting a rebranding effort that aligns with his magazine. This change comes after the last feature film he co-produced, titled “Priscilla,” directed by Sofia Coppola and featuring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi in leading roles, which will premiere at Venice 2023.

This company is made up of Finch, Sara-Ella Ozbek, and Issy Carr. They currently have a deal established with Colombia Pictures, and they’re working on upcoming feature films with Netflix, Sony Pictures, Erik Feig’s Picturestart, Lorenzo Mieli’s recently initiated OUR Films, and Entertainment Film Distribution.

In the short film contest, the panel of judges consisted of filmmaker and actress Isabel Sandoval, along with Bruce Robinson and fellow filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

In the competition, “The Old Young Crow,” a creation by New Yorker Liam LoPinto, took the top spot. This short film, lasting 11 minutes and blending real-life scenes with animation, tells the story of an Iranian boy who develops a friendship with an elderly Japanese woman in a Tokyo cemetery. For his exceptional work, LoPinto received a prize worth £10,000 or approximately $12,600.

The runner-up award was given to Johannes Magnus Aule, an Estonian filmmaker who graduated from NFTS, for his movie “The Tree of Many Faces.” This movie is a Slavic folklore story centered around Anna, a heartbroken woman who strikes a deal with an ancient tree and its mischievous resident. With the prize – five rolls of 400ft 16mm Kodak film for processing and scanning at Kodak’s London lab – Aule will collaborate with Rabbit’s Foot Films to create a unique short film. The plan is to shoot this production in Estonia, with Carr producing it.

In a recent competition, Ciara Kerr, an alumna of the U.K.’s National Film and Television School, received third place for her animation “Homemaker,” which delves into the challenging topic of domestic abuse. The editor’s prize was given to Julia Patey, a Canadian filmmaker based in Berlin, whose original horror short “Bunny’s Foot” won the award. Rabbit’s Foot Films plans to collaborate with Patey on future short and long-form projects. Meanwhile, several other submissions were singled out for recognition: Catherine Marriott Brown’s “Itching,” Alfie Elms’ “Picturing Wonderland,” and Phi Phi’s “Cherry.
