Originally intended as a streaming series on Disney+, “Moana 2” was later transformed into a theatrical film. This change was strategically made by Disney to boost earnings and profitability, and it proved successful. The movie went on to earn over $1 billion at the box office, placing it as the third highest-grossing film of 2024.
The film finds Moana and Maui reconnecting three years on, embarking on a grand, unconventional sea voyage with a motley crew. Following an unexpected summons from her guiding spirits, Moana is compelled to traverse the far reaches of the Oceania ocean and venture into treacherous, ancient waters for a journey unlike any she’s encountered before.
In “Moana 2”, the trio of David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller took on the task of directing, marking their first time at the helm for this production. Unlike Lin-Manuel Miranda who handled the music writing and composition in the original movie, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear stepped into those roles for the sequel.
Auli’i Cravalho reprised her role as Moana alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who once again brought life to the shapeshifting oceanic trickster Maui. The ensemble also featured Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, and Rose Matafeo.
In a review by our main film critic, Owen Gleiberman, it was stated that although the title character and lead, Moana, seems to lack significant personal growth, the film compensates with its lively creatures, engaging actions, and visually appealing sequences that keep your eyes captivated.
