It’s anticipated that Kathleen Kennedy, who has held the position of president at Lucasfilm for a significant period, will resign by the year-end in 2025.
According to one source, she plans to stop working once her present agreement expires. However, another source near Kennedy contested the original report from Puck, calling it mere speculation and stating that no decisions have been made yet.
In 2012, Kennedy became a co-chair at Lucasfilm, working alongside the creator of “Star Wars,” George Lucas. Not long after, when Disney purchased the company for $4 billion, Lucas stepped down from his position, and Kennedy rose to become the president.
Kennedy is known for revitalizing the Star Wars franchise by initiating the sequel trilogy, starting with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” released in 2015, and the critically praised spinoff “Rogue One” in 2016. Additionally, she has mapped out a future for the series on streaming platforms through shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Andor.
As a devoted Star Wars fan, I’ve always been intrigued about the future of J.J. Abrams within Lucasfilm. The success of “The Force Awakens” (domestic box office: $936 million, global: $2 billion) is unparalleled, but it seems that the Skywalker saga films have shown a trend of diminishing returns. For instance, “The Rise of Skywalker,” released in 2019, grossed an impressive $1 billion, yet only half of what “The Force Awakens” made a few years prior. This might not seem significant, but it’s important to note that this revelation came after the financial flop of “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” released in 2018, which unfortunately became the first Star Wars movie to lose money during its theatrical run.
At Lucasfilm, Kennedy was responsible for overseeing the production of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, the fifth and final movie in the series starring Harrison Ford, which was scheduled to release in 2023. This action-adventure film marked the return of this property after a gap of 15 years. However, unfortunately, it turned out to be a major disappointment for the studio, earning $383 million worldwide but costing $295 million to produce, resulting in an estimated loss of approximately $140 million.
Ever since the release of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, it’s been a challenge for the franchise to make its way back to the cinema screen. Despite the studio’s efforts, no new “Star Wars” projects have been completed by filmmakers such as James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover so far. On the other hand, numerous ideas for the space opera series from directors like Patty Jenkins, Kevin Feige, Rian Johnson, and the creators of “Game of Thrones”, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been set aside due to different circumstances.
Lucasfilm intends to return to movie theaters in the future. The popular Disney+ series “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” featuring Pedro Pascal as the helmeted bounty hunter, will hit the big screen in 2026. Additionally, Simon Kinberg, known for his work on “X-Men,” is rumored to be crafting a fresh Star Wars trilogy.
