Contrary to a common critique that Taylor Sheridan’s works often receive regarding his female characters, 1923 actress Helen Mirren holds a different perspective on the matter.
In the portrayal of his on-screen female characters, such as Ainsley in Landman and Beth Dutton in Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan consistently faces criticism for how these women are depicted.
Controversy surrounding the subject matter has escalated significantly after the airing of 1923 Season 2’s first episode. Fans have expressed their disapproval, labeling it as overly-sexualized and inappropriate, due to explicit depictions of sexual assault scenes.
However, Mirren, portraying matriarch Cara Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel series, recently spoke up in defense of Sheridan’s characters, suggesting that women ought to express gratitude.
1923’s Helen Mirren says Sheridan’s women characters are “great”
A woman expressed her gratitude to Taylor Sheridan for crafting strong female characters, with Cara being one example she mentioned, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
He’s penned a remarkable collection of strong female characters. These roles weren’t prevalent during my formative years in the industry. As a spectator, I seldom encountered such individuals on the silver screen. I wasn’t particularly fond of Westerns due to their portrayal of underdeveloped female characters.
I’m particularly fond of the modern reality where young females can enjoy shows like ‘1923’ or other works by Taylor, as they witness authentic, multi-dimensional, resilient, and vulnerable characters who also happen to be women, mirroring real life on the screen.
Mirren recently shared her thoughts, following similar comments by Kevin Costner earlier about the representation of women in Western films. Back in February 2025, Costner told Variety, “I’ve always been troubled that we didn’t have more women in our Westerns, because there was no frontier without women.
