Neverwinter Nights Just Got A New Expansion 23 Years After Its Release

In 2002, BioWare took a trip back to the realm of Dungeons & Dragons before they introduced Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, or Dragon Age Origins. This journey led them to release Neverwinter Nights. Over nearly 23 years since its launch, this game has continued to captivate players who have contributed to its longevity with custom mods. Now, there’s a new expansion for Neverwinter Nights called Doom of Icewind Dale, and it carries the official seal of approval from Wizards of the Coast.

Luke Scull, who initially gained experience as a modder for Neverwinter Nights, later became a game developer at Ossian Studios where he worked on the official expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2, titled Mysteries of Westgate. In addition to his work in gaming, Scull has also made a name for himself as a fantasy author. The Doom of Icewind Dale is the first installment he’s created within a new, multi-part storyline called The Blades of Netheril.

The saga of Doom in Icewind Dale commences approximately two decades following the events of Neverwinter Nights’ campaign. Your character, left for dead and with their memories erased, must embark on a journey to rediscover their identity. Along this path, they will unravel the mystery behind their abduction and ultimately expose a nefarious plan aimed at releasing a wrathful deity upon the Northern lands.

To enjoy the expansion, it’s crucial to first have the main game. At the moment, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition is discounted on Fanatical. As for Doom of Icewind Dale, you can purchase it for $10 from Steam. This expansion offers around 10-15 hours of gameplay, allowing players to traverse some of the 10 towns in Icewind Dale, as well as other locations such as Icewind Pass, the Dwarven Valley, and the Reghed Glacier. It also boasts new creatures and original music specifically composed for the expansion.

Similar to numerous adaptations of Dungeons & Dragons, games like Neverwinter Nights and Doom of Icewind Dale are set within the realm known as The Forgotten Realms. It’s worth noting that this same setting will be utilized for the upcoming live-action Dungeons & Dragons series currently under development.

TopMob and Fanatical are both owned by TopMob.
