Following its debut at the Berlin Film Festival’s competitive category, I’m thrilled to announce that Hong Sang-soo’s thought-provoking film, “What Does That Nature Say,” is now set for distribution in the United States by Cinema Guild! This marks another exciting step towards bringing this unique cinematic work to a wider audience.
This film is the 33rd from a highly productive South Korean filmmaker, who has maintained an outstanding run of six straight years at the Berlin International Film Festival.
This year, “What Does Nature Say,” a movie previously partnered with Hong by Cinema Guild, will hit U.S. theaters. Originating from Jeonwonsa Film and internationally distributed by Finecut, this film will soon be screened across America.
The story unfolds around Donghwa (Ha Seongguk), a poet in his thirties pursuing truth and beauty instead of material wealth. On a leisurely drive back to Junhee’s (Kang Soyi) parents’ home near Seoul, they unexpectedly encounter her father (Kwon Haehyo), who shows curiosity towards Donghwa’s old, damaged car. After a spin around the neighborhood, he invites Donghwa to meet the family: himself, his wife (Cho Yunhee) who shares Donghwa’s passion for poetry, Junhee’s reserved sister (Park Miso), a skilled player of the traditional Korean instrument, gayageum. The day passes pleasantly as they spend time together.
According to Cinema Guild president Peter Kelly, “Hong Sangsoo stands out as one-of-a-kind in his approach.” He added that the movie showcases Hong’s exceptional ability to convey subtlety and simplicity. The acting is superb, and the film carries a profound emotional impact, Kelly concluded.
Peter Kelly from Cinema Guild hashed out an agreement with Youngjoo Suh from Finecut. Upcoming releases for Cinema Guild feature Matías Piñeiro’s “You Burn Me,” Hong Sangsoo’s “By the Stream,” Shinji Sōmai’s Love Hotel, Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich’s “The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire,” and works by João César Monteiro.
