Korea Box Office: ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Stays on Top as ‘Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning’ Opens Strong

Over the past weekend, “Captain America: Brave New World” continued to rule the South Korean box office for the second week in a row; however, its profits took a dip. At the same time, the new animated horror-thriller “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” entered the scene in the second position.

As reported by Kobis, the tracking service managed by the Korean Film Council, “Captain America: Brave New World” continued to lead with earnings of approximately KRW3.1 billion ($2.2 million), representing a 44% share of the market. Over the weekend, this Marvel production drew in 316,146 viewers and has amassed a total gross of $9.2 million so far.

Making its entrance as a runner-up, “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” generated $739,664 during the weekend from 108,090 admissions. Directed by Kim Dong-chul, this movie centers around Father Park, a former doctor who became a priest only to be excommunicated for performing exorcisms. He is summoned by a monk from a mysterious temple to safeguard a powerful child from an evil master, compelling him to grapple with his internal struggles. The film was screened on 841 theaters, accounting for 14.65% of the weekend’s box office revenue and currently boasting total earnings of $794,300.

In third place in this week’s releases is “You Are the Apple of My Eye,” earning $435,276 and capturing 8.62% of the market share. This romantic drama, helmed by Cho Young-myoung, is a remake of the 2011 Taiwanese film with the same title. The story centers around a group of students at a prestigious school who are smitten with a standout student. Showing on 709 screens, it accounted for 8.62% of the market share. Over the weekend, the movie attracted 68,604 viewers and grossed $448,020.

1) “The musical romantic tale ‘Secret: Untold Melody,’ that’s been thriving since its debut in late January, ranked fourth with earnings of $239,067, bringing its total to $5.2 million. In fifth position, the newcomer ‘Paddington in Peru’ earned $216,432, accounting for 4.28% of the market share. Over the weekend, this family adventure movie attracted 34,804 viewers, amassing a total of $295,146.

Moving forward, “Hitman 2” saw a gradual drop in performance, landing at the sixth spot with earnings of $203,070 and attendance of 30,173 viewers. The follow-up to the action-comedy has accumulated a total of $16.6 million since its premiere in January.

Hideo Nakata’s Japanese horror film “The Supernatural Sweet Shop: The Movie” entered the top ten earners with a gross of $108,336 and 17,868 ticket sales, earning it the seventh spot. To date, its total earnings have reached $152,860.
