As a devoted fan, I must admit that The Lands Between has swiftly earned its place among the most memorable open-world video game landscapes ever created. However, it’s not without its share of imperfections, such as Hidetaka Miyazaki’s decision to position Elden Ring‘s toughest region right next to the starting area for players like me, making our journey all the more challenging from the very beginning!
Starting up the game developed by FromSoftware, our corrupted character initially arrives in Limgrave, a region that links to other zones like Liurnia of the Lakes and Caelid. It’s Caelid that tends to cause players the most difficulty, and unfortunately, there’s no way to alleviate that issue.
Hidetaka Miyazaki took his creative liberty way too freely regarding Elden Ring’s map
Previously mentioned, Elden Ring’s expansive open-world map stands out among the best in gaming. Given enough time, you might manage to bypass the starting Tree Sentinel if you wish to avoid it. But brace yourself, because once you enter Caelid – a realm designed explicitly to test players’ limits – chaos erupts without warning.
Due to the nearby location of Limgrave and Caelid, novice players frequently venture into it prematurely. Sometimes they meander past the putrid cliffs or fall victim to a deceitful teleportation trap in a treasure chest, ending up stuck in an environment where they cannot prevail in any fight. Here’s what the experience of a new player entering Caelid might be like, as shared on Elden Ring’s subreddit.

Despite its challenging nature, what’s truly irksome about the region resembling hell isn’t just the toughness. In fact, Caelid is incredibly frustrating because it seems as though every adversary there has been custom-made to provoke you into losing your cool and possibly damaging or even throwing your controller against a wall due to their persistent attacks.
Caelid: The home of Radahn
The region additionally houses one of the game’s most challenging bosses, Radahn. This demigod, born from Radagon and Rennala, was given a fragment of the Elden Ring after it shattered. He also significantly impacts players who wish to progress through Ranni’s questline, as it culminates in the unique Age of Stars ending for the game.
Furthermore, Scarlet Rot stands out as the most frustrating status affliction devised by FromSoftware. Unlike poison, which gradually depletes your health, Scarlet Rot swiftly decimates your health bar at an alarming pace. To make matters worse, almost every surface in Caelid is tainted with this malady.
It’s truly fascinating to consider that Hidetaka Miyazaki intentionally positioned Caelid right beside Limgrave, a choice that some might argue was well thought out and deliberate in its execution.
