An English fire department has given a safety advisory following a residential fire that seems to have originated from an unconventional cleaning method used on a TikTok air fryer.
Over the past couple of years, air fryers have gained immense popularity due to the widespread sharing of simple yet delicious recipes on social media platforms.
Leading corporations are also adopting air fryer cooking guidelines, such as Hot Pockets encouraging users to cook their products using this method following significant changes in their packaging design.
20th February, 2025 saw the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service issue a cautionary statement regarding a popular method for cleaning an air fryer, which they claim resulted in a house fire.
Authorities warn against air fryer cleaning hack
As reported by BBC, numerous fire engines were dispatched to a residence due to persistent fire alarms. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the drawers of an air fryer inside the house had been stuffed with soap and water, causing the false alarm.
Luckily, the building’s sprinkler system had put out the fire before they arrived at the location.
Following the fire incident, authorities advised against using unapproved cleaning methods for air fryers, emphasizing that following the manufacturer’s instructions is crucial.
For quite some time now, the ingenious method of cleaning an air fryer has been widely circulated on social media platforms such as Instagram. In the year 2023, one particular user came across this trick online and thought it was worth a shot.
In the video, Iricksnacks initially fills a bowl with water and dish soap then operates his air fryer for approximately five minutes. He made a comment: “I’m not sure about its safety, but my air fryer now appears as good as new.
Many individuals poured into the comment section to disclose their methods for maintaining cleanliness in their air fryers. Some spoke of using reusable liners, while others underscored the importance of washing it thoroughly after each usage.
