Towards the end of 2019, the creator of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Brendan Green, unveiled his upcoming game for the first time, named Prologue: Go Wayback. In contrast to PUBG, which is a shooter or battle royale game, Prologue is a survival game that places players in a challenging environment filled with harsh weather conditions and dangerous terrains. As per Greene, the high level of difficulty in Prologue might initially make some players dislike it, but he also predicts that they will eventually grow to appreciate it.
Greene shared with PC Gamer that many might dislike it, but he’s content as long as it sparks a response – any response at all. Initially, Battle Royale was met with confusion, but eventually, people caught on. He believes the same will happen here, as our aim is to build immense, shared worlds for everyone. We’ve already released a demo on Steam, and people seem to grasp what it’s about. So, if it generates a response, that’s great! I’m more than happy to engage with those individuals and explain, “Yes, it doesn’t hold your hand because doing so doesn’t serve any purpose.
In the opening phase (Prologue), the objective for players is to survive long enough to discover a weather station that appears randomly on a 8×8 square kilometer map. To achieve this, they must search for essential equipment, manage their hunger and thirst, and engage in combat. The game’s Steam page suggests there are countless possible maps, meaning there’s no one specific route to staying alive. It’s important to note that each time you play, the map will be unique. As of now, Prologue doesn’t have a set release date, but it is expected to enter early access during the second quarter of this year. If you’re interested in participating in Prologue’s test sessions, more information can be found here.
Approximately a year past, Greene and his team at PlayerUnknown Productions disclosed that Prologue forms part of an extended strategy involving three games, one of which is Project Artemis. In the meantime, the publisher of PUBG, Krafton, along with Nvidia, have announced plans for AI-driven teammates in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, designed to mimic human behavior. Additionally, Krafton is developing the first spin-off of PUBG, titled PUBG: Blindspot.
