Once upon a time, it would have seemed unimaginable for PlayStation-exclusive games to be played on PC, but the times have certainly evolved. Games such as Insomniac’s Spider-Man series, Housemarque’s Returnal, and the Horizon series are among several prominent PlayStation properties that have been released on PC since 2020. In fact, former PlayStation leader Shuhei Yoshida has commented that this transition is somewhat like having a license to mint money.
In an interview, Yoshida explained that launching a game on PC broadens our reach by tapping into audiences who don’t own consoles, particularly in regions where console popularity is low. This strategy could potentially create new fans for specific franchises, prompting them to consider buying a PlayStation when a new game from the series comes out. Furthermore, developing for PC is less expensive than creating an entirely original title, providing extra revenue. Essentially, it’s like generating money effortlessly. This additional income helps us invest in new games, as production costs have risen.
Sony’s expansion into PC gaming provides an advantage as it opens up access to thriving markets such as China, where personal computers are more prevalent than consoles. As Yoshida explained, “China has a growing yet relatively small console market. To tap into audiences in countries like China, it’s essential to offer games on PC platforms. I firmly believe that PC releases help us reach a new demographic.
In the coming days, Sony will unveil The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered for PC, following closely on the heels of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s release this year. Since his departure from Sony in January, Yoshida has been featured in numerous interviews. Joining Sony in 1983, he served for 38 years until a new indies initiative required him to take charge in 2019. At the time, he felt he had no other option as refusing would have meant leaving the company altogether.
Yoshida openly discussed his approach if he were still SIE President, stating he would have resisted the move towards live-service games. He also explained the reason behind the lack of a Bloodborne remaster at this time.
