A24’s ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Spring Breakers’ Coming to Imax Theaters for One Night Only

The Academy Award-winning film “Moonlight,” directed by Barry Jenkins in 2016, is coming back to cinemas on Thursday, February 27. On the other hand, Harmony Korine’s 2013 college crime comedy, “Spring Breakers,” will be re-released on Wednesday, March 19. You can buy tickets for both movies right here.

Both films will screen at Imax locations across the U.S. and at select locations internationally.

The A24 and Imax screening series began in March last year, starting with Alex Garland’s “Ex Machina,” before the premiere of his 2024 blockbuster “Civil War.” Since then, this independent studio has re-released a number of beloved movies such as “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” “Uncut Gems,” “Oasis: Supersonic,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Stop Making Sense,” “The Lighthouse,” “The Witch,” “The Green Knight” and “Talk to Me.”

Last March marked the launch of the A24 and Imax screening series with Alex Garland’s “Ex Machina,” preceding the debut of his 2024 blockbuster “Civil War.” Since then, this indie studio has reintroduced popular films like “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” “Uncut Gems,” “Oasis: Supersonic,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Stop Making Sense,” “The Lighthouse,” “The Witch,” “The Green Knight” and “Talk to Me.

Reviving classic films for screenings in cinemas, either for a single night or an extended period, has grown popular as production companies aim to maximize profits from their movie libraries. As reported by EbMaster in December, at least 27 timeless movies were re-released in 2024 across over 100 domestic theaters, generating a total gross of over $90 million. A24 has also leveraged Imax screenings to generate buzz for upcoming releases such as “Civil War.” Furthermore, with “Stop Making Sense,” they turned the viewing experience into an event, collaborating with Imax, showcasing it at the Toronto Film Festival, producing a tribute album, and even temporarily reuniting the band.

Moonlight” is a poignant drama that chronicles the evolution of a man’s life as he navigates his sexuality across three distinct periods. It features an ensemble cast including Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris, and Mahershala Ali, who was awarded best supporting actor for his captivating portrayal.

One of the initial films distributed by A24 was ‘Spring Breakers’, which proved to be financially successful despite having a modest budget. The movie features James Franco in the role of a drug dealer, who draws in college partygoers Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine into his realm of crime and violence.
