Burt’s Shocking Secret: Is He a Lumon Spy in Severance?

Following episode 6 of Severance Season 2, it appears that Burt may be hiding something – and here are three clues suggesting he’s covertly working for Lumon.

Throughout Severance’s second season, Burt and Irving have maintained a distance from each other. In Episode 5, after noticing Burt in a nearby vehicle, Irving approached him to address the matter. It turned out that Burt had been intrigued by an incident involving his Innie (the one who pounded on his door during the OTC) and the termination over an “unapproved emotional connection.

Initially, their discussion is tense, but it soon transforms into a warm exchange, leading to Burt extending an invitation to Irving for a dinner at his home, where he resides with his partner Fields.

It all seems innocent enough, but things get a bit… weird, both on and off-screen in Episode 6.

Why Burt is clearly working for Lumon in Severance

In an unintentional slip-up following a few too many glasses of wine, Field reveals a significant piece of information: they shared drinks with a person who was Burt’s “Lumon partner” twenty years back. However, it’s worth noting that the first Lumon office wasn’t established until 12 years ago.

Burt advises Fields to drink less, and after Irving departs, Burt asserts that Fields was intoxicated at the time, adding that it’s impossible for him to have worked for Lumon so long ago, since severance wasn’t available yet – or so he claims.

Secondly, as Irving heads towards his car, Burt’s countenance shifts; his smile transforms into a grave, somewhat worried expression. Given that we noticed him observing Irving in Season 2, it seems likely he has something to conceal. It would not be surprising if he were a Lumon agent operating outside of the company.

In Episode 6, there’s a hint that could be significant. As Irving dines with Burt, we observe Mr. Drummond secretly burglarizing Irving’s home and searching through his belongings, focusing on his lists of employees who have been terminated at Lumon – notably, including Burt. Could their meeting be a mere coincidence, or was Burt possibly assigned to keep Irving occupied while Mr. Drummond made the break-in?

It’s important to note that this idea is merely a hypothesis – yet it’s not just me who holds this view. As one Reddit user put it, “Burt should not be trusted at all. The plan to get Irving out of the house so his belongings could be seized?

It’s said that Burt was one of the original pioneers at Lumon, even before they developed the Severance technology.”

“Someone quipped, ‘Burt is as old-school as it gets,’ a playful reference to Dylan’s quote from Severance Season 1.

It’s clear that Burt is still working at Lumon, isn’t it?” was one person’s observation. “There have been so many dramatic events this episode. Burt continues to work for Lumon, Helena seems obsessed with him, and Mark is struggling with the unsevering process. I can’t help but wonder why Burt and Lumon are focusing on Irving,” another added.
