Kamal Haasan to Chair India’s FICCI Media-Entertainment Committee South as Tamil Nadu Ramps Up Film Infrastructure

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I find myself honored to be chosen for the role of heading the Media and Entertainment Committee South for the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). This esteemed position was announced at the FICCI’s Media & Entertainment Business Conclave South Connect 2025 held in Chennai.

The two-day event, which was opened by Haasan together with Udhayanidhi Stalin, currently holding the position of Deputy Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu, is taking place as the influence of South Indian cinema grows on a worldwide scale.

Stalin revealed grand designs for an expansive 152-acre movie metropolis in Chennai, offering cutting-edge amenities such as virtual production tech, VFX studios, LED screens, and a luxury hotel. Additionally, he announced the reactivation of a long-idle 2010 land leasing scheme initiated by ex-Chief Minister Karunanidhi, allowing for the construction of housing complexes for film industry personnel on a 90-acre site close to Kelambakkam.

Haasan advocated for flexible regulatory structures that support, rather than limit, advancements in technology. Additionally, he urged the deputy CM to review and revise the state’s entertainment tax on cinemas.

Haasan proposed a more accommodating regulatory approach towards innovative technologies. Furthermore, he asked the deputy CM to reconsider and reform the state tax for cinema entertainment.

Kevin Vaz, CEO of JioStar Entertainment and head of FICCI’s Media and Entertainment Committee, emphasized the transformation of South India from a regional player to a global powerhouse in the entertainment industry. He pointed to recent blockbusters like “RRR” and “K.G.F: Chapter 2” as examples showing the industry’s increasing influence.

At the gathering I recently attended, we discussed topics ranging from television and streaming to gaming, animation, and visual effects. A special segment called “PlayNext” was dedicated exclusively to gaming and e-sports. Notable figures like Sandhya Devanathan, the head of Meta India, and Arjun Nohwar, the chief of Warner Bros. Discovery in South Asia, were among those present, showcasing their influence within these industries.

The event is taking place Feb. 21-22.
