In honor of the 35th year since the debut of the cherished 1990s anime known as “Samurai Pizza Cats”, a fresh video game is now being developed for release. Simultaneously, a unique trailer showcasing the original voice actors has been unveiled!

Initially airing in Japan on February 1, 1990, this series was called “Kyatto Ninden Teyandee”. It’s a science fiction, action-comedy animated show that takes place in the city of Edoropolis, populated by anthropomorphic robotic animals. The show gained significant global attention when it was renamed as “Samurai Pizza Cats” and distributed internationally. Since then, it has retained a devoted fanbase.

The upcoming game titled “Samurai Pizza Cats: Back from the Past” is being developed by the creative minds behind Jitsu Squad, namely BLAST ZERO (a Dutch studio), and will be distributed worldwide by Red Dunes Games based in the United Arab Emirates. This action-packed RPG is designed in 2D format, enabling players to effortlessly switch between different Pizza Cats characters, leveraging their distinct abilities to solve puzzles and participate in exhilarating battles within the setting of Little Tokyo. The recently unveiled trailer beautifully replicates the original anime’s cel animation style, offering glimpses of gameplay footage as well. Interestingly, the Japanese script for the trailer is being overseen by Satoru Akahori, the original screenwriter.

English cast from left to right:

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Sonja Ball (Polly Esther), Dean Hagopian (Seymour “The Big Cheese”), Rick Jones (Speedy Cerviche), and Terrence Scammell are reprising their roles! Yes, you heard it right, Guido Anchovy, the Narrator himself, is back. Can’t wait to dive into this exciting cast once again!

The trailer also features an impressive voice cast reunion from both the English and Japanese show.

The English version features Rick Jones playing Speedy Cerviche, Sonja Ball as Polly Esther, Terrence Scammell in the roles of Guido Anchovy and the Narrator, and Dean Hagopian reprising his role as Seymour “The Big” Cheese.

In this Japanese production, we have Kappei Yamaguchi known for his role as Yattarou, Ai Orikasa playing Pururun, Ikuya Sawaki portraying Kitsunezuka Ko’on-no-Kami, Naoki Tatsuta as Karasu Gennarisai, and Kenyu Horiuchi serving as the Narrator. Joining the cast is Seiichirō Yamashita, who steps into the role of Sukashii, previously played by Jurota Kosugi, his senior at the same talent agency.

To mark this momentous occasion, Kappei Yamaguchi (Yattarou), Ai Orikasa (Pururun), and Seiichirō Yamashita shared their thoughts:

Kappei Yamaguchi (Yattarou): “Recording Yattarou’s voice again after so many years was a delightful surprise! Yattarou, along with Ranma, is one of my most cherished roles as a voice actor. I was overjoyed when I heard about the game and even more so when it became a reality. It felt fantastic to exclaim ‘Tenkamuteki no Daishōri!!’ (‘Unrivaled, ultimate victory!!’) again. I adore Yattarou immensely!”

On reuniting with the original cast: “Stepping back into the recording studio after all these years was like reliving old memories. Hearing Ko’on-no-Kami (Kon-chan) and Gennarisai’s (Gen-chan) banter, Kenyū-san’s witty narration, and the Nyankī squad’s signature introductions was a wonderful experience. The trailer accurately recreated the original animation style, which showcases the dedication of the Dutch development team. I would like to extend my gratitude to Seiichirō Yamashita for bringing Sukashii to life!”

On the 35th anniversary of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee (Samurai Pizza Cats): “Congratulations on 35 years of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee! It brings me immense joy to hear more and more people express their love for this series. The fact that it continues to be adored not only in Japan but also overseas is truly remarkable. This is a work that I will hold dear, and Yattarou remains an integral part of my career.”

Ai Orikasa (Pururun): “Recording Pururun’s voice once again left me deeply moved. The quality of the visuals was outstanding, and it was clear that the game development team had a genuine passion for this series. Seeing Ko-on-no-Kami and Gennarisai interact was thrilling, and I was overjoyed to utter Pururun’s signature catchphrase once more.

1. On reuniting with the cast: “It’s amazing how this series has stayed fresh in my heart even after 35 years. As soon as I started recording again with Kappei-san and the rest, it felt like Pururun’s lines just flowed naturally. Seiichirō Yamashita did an excellent job as Sukashii—he really captured the essence of the character.”

2. On the 35th anniversary of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee: “Even our post-recording hangouts (laughs) were a blast! I truly believe that the bond between cast and crew is what made the show so special. It’s an honor to be part of a series that continues to be cherished after all these years. Keep supporting Kyatto Ninden Teyandee!”

3. Seiichirō Yamashita (Sukashii) — Before you knew about Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, what was your experience recording for the trailer? “To be honest, I wasn’t familiar with Kyatto Ninden Teyandee before this project. It’s incredible to work on a series that predates my birth. The recording session was truly unique—I got to perform alongside legends like Kappei Yamaguchi, observing them up close in such a dynamic environment.”

4. On taking over the role of Sukashii from your senior colleague Jūrōta Kosugi: “It’s a humbling honor to ‘inherit’ this role. This is my first time stepping into a character previously portrayed by another actor, and I felt a deep responsibility to preserve the image of Sukashii that fans hold dear. The support from the production team was invaluable, and this has been an unforgettable experience for me.”

5. On the 35th anniversary of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee: “Stories have a way of leaving lasting impressions on people, and the love for Kyatto Ninden Teyandee has endured over decades. To be part of bringing this beloved series back in a brand-new game is truly remarkable. This opportunity is a cherished milestone in my acting career, and I hope fans continue to support the series for years to come!”
