Nicole Kidman Worked With 19 Female Directors in Eight Years After Vowing to Do So: Things Only Change ‘By Actually Being in the Films of Women’

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been thrilled to witness Nicole Kidman‘s unwavering commitment to collaborating with women directors. To put it mildly, she has not only kept her 2017 pledge but surpassed expectations. Over the past eight years, this esteemed Oscar winner has partnered with a female director an impressive 19 times, both as a producer and actor. And the exciting news is that there are more female-led projects in the works for us to look forward to.

In an interview with Time magazine, Kidman highlighted that she’s made a commitment due to the unfair double standard faced by women filmmakers. These directors often feel pressured to produce flawless films when they receive funding, and any mistakes are not tolerated. In contrast, male directors tend to be given another opportunity if their movie isn’t perfect, while female directors risk being dismissed if they don’t achieve perfection in their work.

Kidman noted that the situation can be altered, but the change can only occur if women are involved in the films themselves.

Nicole Kidman’s latest film is “Babygirl,” directed by Halina Reijn, and she’s currently starring in Mimi Cave’s suburban thriller “Holland.” Her recent small-screen appearances include Lulu Wang’s series “Expats” on Amazon Prime Video and Susanne Bier’s miniseries “The Perfect Couple” on Netflix.

Time magazine observed that Kidman frequently collaborates with numerous female directors, which has some basis in truth. Apart from the projects mentioned earlier, Kidman also appears in “Lioness” on Paramount+ and wrapped up the second season of Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers” last year. She’s currently working alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in the series “Scarpetta,” and a follow-up to “Practical Magic” is being developed as well.

Last year, Kidman expressed that one reason she remains an active actor is due to the abundance of opportunities to assist those rising in the industry. She explained that she utilizes her skills and experience to benefit individuals such as Helena [Reijn].

She finds it challenging to prioritize self-care due to her strong inclination towards helping others. Instead of focusing on herself, she’s often thinking about generating work or creating jobs for other people. Additionally, she truly enjoys what she does and has the enthusiasm for it. If only she had superpowers, she would be able to be in multiple places at once.

Kidman expressed, “This is something I’ve longed for since childhood. I truly enjoy what I do, so I’ll put all my effort into it and then return home to be with my family. We spend time together. I don’t go out to nightclubs.

Up next for Kidman is the debut of “Holland” at SXSW, featuring Matthew Macfadyen, Jude Hill, and Gael García Bernal. This movie will be available for viewing on March 27 through Amazon MGM Studios.
