League of Legends Devs Gut Free Loot System

The uproar over the elimination of free Hextech Chests and related issues has swept through the League of Legends (LoL) community, prompting developers to further reduce available free sources of loot.

For nearly a decade, players could earn Hextech Chests within the League of Legends game. However, developers recently decided to take them out because they wanted to encourage players to purchase skins instead of only grinding for them. This change aims to stimulate spending among players.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but voice my concerns about the recent rumors surrounding Riot Games and the potential layoffs they’ve experienced. In response, an overwhelming wave of passion from the player community has swept across all of League of Legends’ social media platforms. We, the fans, are standing up against these changes and making our voices heard, hoping to bring back our beloved champions and restore the game we hold dear.

Since the recent announcement, no League of Legends posts have been published without being heavily criticized or downvoted by upset fans.

In update 25.4, developers chose to eliminate all the complimentary Honor capsules and orbs awarded for good sportsmanship within the game. Furthermore, users have found out that the Your Shop feature was also taken out.

League of Legends guts Honor system and Your Shop

The behavior of toxicity within games has become synonymous with League, more so than any other aspect. While many games are played amicably, the unpleasant encounters some players have had with this game linger and have given it an undesirable reputation in online forums, making it a frequent target of criticism.

Instead, Riot implemented a system with stringent guidelines and enticing perks to encourage sportsmanlike behavior among players during their games: The Honor system and its associated benefits.

Showing kindness towards fellow team members and maintaining composure during tough situations earned players recognition, as their honor levels steadily increased and they accumulated free skins on their journey to reaching Honor level 5.

Initially, players were anticipated to receive regular opportunities for acquiring free skins for crafting or characters for earning, in addition to skins as rewards for achieving high ranks in the Honor system. Unfortunately, all these features have now been completely removed.

Guys double downing on the Chests/Capsules might not be the ideal decision

— Marcin Jankowski (@JankosLoL) February 19, 2025

Experienced League of Legends professional Jankos offered his perspective, stating, “Perhaps it’s not wise to continue focusing on Chests/Capsules.

Although players can still acquire the Honor-bound skin rewards (making it quicker for newcomers), no other incentives will be given for showing kindness towards teammates. Even though some might think that rewards aren’t necessary for being kind, the elimination of another method to obtain skins has left many players upset.

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that the feature known as “Your Shop,” which offers random discounts on Champions’ skins based on frequent play, has been taken out of the game.

The series of modifications has led to two main responses: a player boycott of in-game cosmetic items (skins) and direct criticism towards CEO Dylan Jadeja, along with the Riot C-Suite, as they are accused of driving the game’s sudden and extreme changes that have moved it away from a more accessible free-to-play model.

This is a Dylan Jadeja appreciation thread.

Players are choosing to avoid the latest skins by transforming them into Hextech Chests instead, such as the Mordekaiser skin which makes him look like a character composed entirely of loot containers.

Despite players being displeased with Riot, their firm stance to eliminate additional free items and discounts indicates that they’re unlikely to reconsider this decision in the near future.
