‘Queerpanorama’ Director Reported to Berlin Police After Delivering Pro-Palestinian Speech, but Film Reps Say He Has Not Been Contacted About Investigation

At the Berlin Film Festival, Hong Kong filmmaker Jun Li has ignited a minor political uproar. According to reports, this was triggered by a supportive statement he made for Palestine during the screening of his movie “Queerpanorama,” which may have initiated an investigation by local law enforcement.

During the presentation of “Queerpanorama,” the director spoke on behalf of its lead character, Erfan Shekarriz, who chose not to attend this year’s festival as a form of protest against what he perceives as the Berlin Film Festival’s lack of support for Palestinians. This view was sparked by the controversy surrounding pro-Palestine statements during the closing ceremony last year.

In a statement given to EbMaster, Tricia Tuttle – the new artistic director of Berlinale – stated that they are aware of a complaint filed regarding an incident at the festival. As this requires investigation, Berlin police have been notified to look into any potential allegations. At present, no criminal proceedings have been initiated, and the Berlinale will stay in touch with the authorities to gather more details. Additionally, Tuttle emphasized that the festival is concerned about the safety of the visiting filmmakers and is actively seeking information from the Berlin police regarding the current state of affairs.

American-native Tuttle stated that the festival had earlier declared its dedication to upholding free speech rights within the boundaries of German legislation, and they’ve spent considerable effort assisting their foreign filmmakers in grasping potentially controversial language that may be legally questionable.

Before the festival began its 75th run, organizers made clear their stance on freedom of expression, particularly regarding expressions of solidarity with Palestine, and advised attendees to exercise caution when using the phrase “from the river to the sea.” This phrase has been prosecuted in Berlin under certain circumstances. Politicians on both sides of the conflict have used this slogan to advocate for a single state in the region.
