The library is vast, with a tally under 9,000 games, and they span various genres – not all are fighting games; some are role-playing games (RPGs)! So, let’s embark on this exciting journey to discover the crème de la crème of Dragon Ball games.
Hey there! In honor of Dragon Ball Xenoverse’s 10-year anniversary, I’ve dug up some of my favorite titles starring the Z Fighters from my personal collection. So, without further ado, let me share with you a rundown of the top games in this legendary franchise!
10. Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit
- Release date: June 10, 2008
- Genre: Fighting
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d like to sing praises for a somewhat overlooked gem – Burst Limit. Though it may not boast revolutionary gameplay mechanics, it truly shines in visual appeal and sheer entertainment value. However, what truly sets this game apart is its unique feature: Drama Pieces. Essentially, these are cinematic scenes that can be equipped within the game, influencing the outcome of battles. It’s a fascinating twist that adds an extra layer of strategy to the gameplay experience.
This type of element (as its name implies) brings a touch of theatricality to each conflict, since you’re always uncertain when an adversary might be revitalized with a Senzu bean or amplified by a friend’s attack. Regrettably, due to a mediocre campaign mode and limited roster of playable characters, we can’t rate this game any higher.
9. Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans

In simpler terms, the strategy role-playing game “Attack of the Saiyans” is a bit more strategic than other games in this category. To unleash your strongest abilities, you need to increase your anger gauge by either attacking enemies or getting attacked yourself until you’re enraged enough to enter Sparking Mode.

To put it frankly, I’ve discovered that this particular game is quite challenging, yet overcoming an adversary has always been immensely gratifying for me. Additionally, the visual appeal of the game is undeniable; the characters are intricately designed, the settings are rich and vivid, and the animations exude charm and personality.
8. Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors

In simpler terms, “Supersonic Warriors” is an exhilarating fighting game on Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance system, mimicking the intense, action-packed fights from Dragon Ball Z. Remarkably, the game features dynamic camera work that swiftly moves about as your characters engage in explosive attacks like blasts, punches, and kicks. This level of camera movement is unexpected for a Game Boy Advance title.
The game’s visuals are stunning, and it’s evident that great effort has been made to make them closely resemble the TV series. Furthermore, the cinematography is quite dynamic.
7. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Kakarot generated a great deal of anticipation following its unveiling, being an action RPG that seemed to have animation-style graphics lifted directly from the anime. Although it’s not the most revolutionary Dragon Ball game, it offers an engaging means to delve into Goku’s tale.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that this new take on the Z Saga storyline is an exhilarating journey back into the world we adore, whether you’re a seasoned fan or just starting your adventure. The expansive areas are enticing to delve into, even though they may seem sparsely populated at times (though don’t forget about the fishing minigame—it’s a nice touch!). However, I find the side missions and overall RPG aspects could use some refinement. The necessity of grinding by defeating lower-level foes before tackling those epic boss battles can be a tad frustrating at times.
In essence, Kakarot didn’t meet all expectations but remains a game worth playing, especially for the thrill of soaring through familiar landscapes. There’s plenty of additional content to explore, such as the History of Trunks DLC and an upcoming Daima expansion. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more Kid Goku adventures beyond his World Tournament fight with King Piccolo.

6. Dragon Ball Sparking Zero

Showcasing a powerful roster of combatants, sleek visuals, and a refined take on the Tenkaichi gameplay system, Sparking Zero is effortless to adore. Despite not having the RPG features found in other games, it compensates with an immersive storyline and fascinating hypothetical situations – such as Gohan Black and Frieza taking command during the Tournament of Power arc.
Regrettably, despite being an excellent game (check out our review of Sparking Zero for additional insights), it didn’t manage to crack the top five due to its relatively modest single-player content, which pales slightly against other games within the same series.
5. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

- Genre: Action RPG
It seems as though someone’s dream of the Dragon Balls came true when the Xenoverse series was created, since it looks like something straight out of a fan’s wish for the series.
For decades, fans who watched Goku battle his foes in Dragon Ball have yearned for a game that allows them to create their own unique Saiyan, Majin, Human, or Frieza character, each with the ability to be fully customized to their liking.
Your character could acquire all the iconic moves from the anime, form friendships with both the Z-fighters and their adversaries, and the narrative remains intriguing – despite being essentially a pretext for punching familiar faces once more.
4. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3
- Release date: November 16, 2004
- Genre: Fighting
Budokai 3 marked a significant turning point for the Dragon Ball series, as it successfully captured the high-speed action that made the show’s battles so thrilling. The incorporation of a quick evasion move, which let players swiftly dodge attacks by rapidly pressing a button, was truly groundbreaking, and likely contributes to why the game remains popular today.
This game stands out not just for its smooth gameplay, but also for its well-crafted character lineup and visually stunning cell-shaded graphics. While many find the dodge button enticing, another significant draw is its engaging story mode. This feature lets you fly over the Earth as your preferred Z-Fighter, delving into the world’s nooks and crannies, and at times, leading the narrative on strange and unusual paths.
3. Dragon Ball FighterZ

- Genre: Fighting
From a purely gameplay perspective, Dragon Ball FighterZ stands out as one of the best fighting games within the Dragon Ball series. The fighting mechanics offer depth that appeals to seasoned combat veterans, while also making the controls simpler than other games in this genre, giving novice players a sense of power and mastery.
Regarding mighty combatants, although the number of characters may be less compared to other games within this collection, you’ll find all the fan-favorites included, along with a handful of unique and unconventional picks to cater to the dedicated enthusiasts – apologies to Super Baby fans.
It seems to me that the primary motivation for playing this game lies in its stunning visuals. Dragon Ball FighterZ boasts breathtaking graphics, smooth character movements, jaw-dropping ultimate attacks, and vibrant stages. Essentially, it feels like being able to control an animated series. However, despite these captivating features, the relatively limited number of characters available is a significant drawback for some, including myself.
2. Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku 2
- Release date: July 17, 2003
- Genre: Action RPG
Originally, the first Legacy of Goku on the Game Boy Advance was a good role-playing game. However, Legacy 2 not only maintained this format but also made significant enhancements, making it a longstanding favorite among fans even to this day.
Contrary to its name, it’s not primarily Goku who takes center stage; rather, other characters do. Starting off with a captivating perspective from young Gohan, the narrative unfolds. Characters like Piccolo, Vegeta, Trunks, and even Goku are gradually introduced throughout the story, ensuring that gameplay remains consistently engaging as it evolves.
As a gamer, I was super excited about the transformations in this sequel – they added an extra edge to my characters, but with the catch that using them would drain my energy bar. This meant I had to strategize carefully when to unleash my stronger forms during battle. Plus, it was dope that this was the first Dragon Ball game to bring Bruce Faulconer’s music over to America. The soundtrack felt like a direct extension of the anime, making the whole experience even more epic!
In essence, the game Legacy 2 effectively compacted numerous anime episodes into an engaging 15-hour role-playing experience, making it a recommended revisit in 2025.

In truth, what makes this game particularly popular is its astonishing variety of characters to play as; the game boasts nearly every Dragon Ball character conceivable, ranging from lesser-known favorites like Nuova Shenron and General Blue, to rather unusual choices such as Fasha (if you’re not familiar with her, don’t worry, she’s not well-known). It even includes characters like Arale.
Additionally, there were some quite unusual hypothetical situations presented, such as Devil Man overpowering Frieza – hard to believe, isn’t it? To put it simply, fans adore this game due to its exceptional handling of fan service compared to any other title within the series.
