Kirsten Sheridan, a writer who’s been nominated for an Oscar and has recently penned episodes for the popular FX show “Say Nothing” as well as serving as executive producer on the drama “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” is planning to adapt the tale of one of Ireland’s esteemed national figures into a movie.
An acclaimed Irish filmmaker, who’s Jim Sheridan’s daughter, has acquired the rights for “Grace O’Malley — The Biography of Ireland’s Pirate Queen,” penned by respected biographer Anne Chambers. This historical feature film will be jointly produced by Wild Atlantic Pictures (known for “Evil Dead Rise,” “Cocaine Bear,” and “Abigail”) in partnership with Reclaim Entertainment Ventures based in Los Angeles. The production is slated to commence in 2026.
Sheridan, who earned an Oscar nomination for the semi-autobiographical film “In America” together with her father and sister Naomi Sheridan, and who has directorial credits in films like “Disco Pigs” and “August Rush”, has been collaborating with Chambers on this feature project for several years.
The narrative will delve into the remarkable true account of a historic encounter between Queen Elizabeth I, a dominant figure in British history, and Grace O’Malley, a fearless 16th-century Irish pirate known as Granuaile. Upon learning that her youngest son was captured, Grace boldly navigates her way up the Thames to engage Queen Elizabeth in a face-to-face discussion. Over the span of seven days, these leaders from opposing nations challenge each other’s identities, expose their vulnerabilities, gain mutual respect, and form an alliance as equals to shape not only their nations but also their deepest personal realms.
As a cinephile deeply moved by tales of Irish heritage, I can honestly say that this project is a deeply personal labor of love for me. Every woman in Ireland knows the story of Grace O’Malley – it’s one of power, resilience, and rebellion. She challenged societal norms, ruled her own life, and faced off against the most powerful woman in history. In many ways, Grace was the ultimate punk pagan ‘savage,’ hailing from a tribe of warriors, yet also from the esteemed caste of filí, known for their poetic prowess and divination abilities.
Sheridan’s concept for the movie is characterized as “edgy and modern,” delving into topics such as sexuality, identity, and gender through a “fresh and thought-provoking perspective.” The production will not only showcase Grace’s remarkable achievements but also delve into her intricate personal tale as a leader, mother, and survivor.
Sheridan is managed by Rosalie Swedlin and Bec Smith at Anonymous Content, Anna Flickinger and James Kearney at UTA, and Joe Dapello at Schreck, Rose, Dapello and Adams – collectively serving as their talent representatives.
