Sony Pictures to Remake Japanese Box Office Hit ‘366 Days’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Sony’s Columbia Pictures has obtained the license to re-create the hit Japanese romantic drama “366 Days,” which has been a sensation at the box office, tailored for viewers who speak English.

Produced and distributed jointly by Shochiku and Sony Pictures Japan, the movie has been a successful local box office sensation since its January 10 premiere. Driven by positive word-of-mouth, “366 Days” reached the top spot in total ticket sales by its fourth weekend and now holds the title for the highest-grossing locally produced Hollywood studio film in Japan based on an original screenplay. The film has generated over $11 million in revenue.

Takehiko Shinjo, known for his work on ‘And Yet, You Are So Sweet’, and scriptwriter Kaho Fukuda, who penned ‘We Made a Beautiful Bouquet’, are leading the upcoming film ‘366 Days’. The movie takes its title from a popular Japanese band HY’s hit song. Columbia Pictures is supervising the remake under Peter Kang.”

The movie focuses on Minato Makiya, played by Eiji Akaso (“Pending Train”), a senior from Okinawa high school who develops feelings for younger student Miu Tamashiro (Moka Kamishiraishi, “The Forest of Wool and Steel”) due to their mutual love for music. Their relationship strengthens, but it’s cut short when Minato experiences the loss of his mother, causing him to contemplate abandoning his musical dreams. With support from Miu, he decides to relocate to Tokyo to chase his ambitions.

Two summers past, I trailed Minato to the metropolis, harboring dreams of crafting a shared destiny whilst pursuing my ambition as a budding translator. However, our joyous reunion took an unexpected and heart-wrenching twist when he abruptly severed our bond and vanished without a trace.
